Kenneth Hornbeck, served nation, church
Airplanes and automobiles played major roles in the life of Kenneth Lee Hornbeck, along with service to his country, church, lodge and community.
Mr. Hornbeck, 84, of Park Hills, died Saturday morning in St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
He was a retired owner and operator of Beechwood Motors, and a former salesman for Ridgeview Lincoln Mercury Co., Covington.
'He had sold cars way back in the 1930s, Hudson Terraplanes, among them,' recalled a friend, Tom Gaither.
Mr. Hornbeck was also a pilot, and flew combat missions in World War II. 'He joined the Canadian Air Force before America entered the war, and then switched over to the Army Air Corps,' said Gaither. Mr. Hornbeck piloted B-29 bombers, on raids over Japan and the Pacific islands, Gaither said.
Mr. Hornbeck was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where in earlier years he was a vestryman, lay leader and head usher. 'He was a very committed and very caring person,' said the Rev. Joe Pennington, pastor of the church.
Mr. Hornbeck was active in Masonic organizations, including the Covington Lodge No. 109; Indra Consistory Scottish Rite, and the Syrian Shrine, Cincinnati.
He was a long-time member of the Covington Rotary Club, and also belonged to the Metropolitan Club of Covington. Both Rev. Pennington and Gaither were in Rotary with Mr. Hornbeck.
'He was very active in the club,' said the Rev. Pennington. 'I believe his membership went back to the 1950s,' added Gaither.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Voss Hornbeck of Park Hills. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Episcopal Church, Covington. Graveside services and burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Hope Cemetery, Champaign, Ill. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Episcopal Church, 326 Madison Ave., Covington, Ky. 41011. Robert Ashcraft Sr., 72, of Bellevue, died this morning. Services are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler.
Guy W. Beane, 74, of Highland Heights, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was a retired engineer for Formica Corp., Cincinnati, and an Army veteran of World War II.
He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring; Formica Retirees Organization, of which he was a former president; St. Vincent DePaul Society; Holy Name Society of St. Joseph Church; and Cincinnati Management Club, having served as president. He also was a second-grade tutor for St. Joseph School, Cold Spring.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Beane; a daughter, Mary Miller of Demossville; sons, Paul Beane of Louisville, Greg Beane of Alexandria and David Beane Camp Springs; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Radel Funeral Home, Highland Heights. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Covington.
William Henry Carpenter, 88, of Florence, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a retired residential construction contractor and a member of Faith Christian Center, Park Hills.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie Martin Carpenter; daughters, Cathy Alford and Debbie Kinman, both of Fort Mitchell, and Brenda Carpenter of Florence; sons, Charles Carpenter of Union and Chester W. Carpenter of Erlanger; a brother, Charles Carpenter of Independence; sisters, Viola Martin of Taylor Mill and Ruth Treadway of Mesquite, Texas; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Jean 'Foxy' Demoisey, 77, of Ft. Thomas, died 8:50 p.m. Sunday in St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. Services are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton.
Dallas June Doran, 65, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died Saturday in Franciscan Hospital, Mount Airy. She was a payroll clerk. A son, Rick E. Fry, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Hugh Doran; a son, Michael E. Fry; daughters, Karon S. Hollaender and Laura J. Howard; a brother, Charles Hall; a sister, Betty Wallace; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Clarene Earl Easton, 87, of Florence, died Friday at Woodspoint Nursing Home in Florence. He was a retired baggage handler for TWA Airlines.
Survivors include his wife, Mabel Sorrell Easton; daughters, Wilma Moore of Melbourne, Fla., and Donna Walton of Cottonwood, Ariz.; sons, Joseph Daryl Easton of Melbourne, Fla., and James 'Jimmy' Easton of Burlington; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery.
Eulah Webster Ellis, 94, of Owenton, died Friday at Owenton Manor. She was a homemaker and a member of Beech Grove Baptist Church, Owenton. Her husband, Huey Dean Ellis, preceded her in death.
There are no immediate survivors.

Evelyn Elizabeth Kampsen Flinker, 87, of Newport, died Thursday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. She was retired sales clerk for the former Pogue's Department Store, Cincinnati. Her husband, Elmer M. Flinker, died in 1973.
Survivors include sons, Paul J. Flinker of Covington and David B. Flinker of Forest Park, Ohio; a sister, Ruth Kettler of Fort Wright; a brother, Bernard Kampsen of Villa Hills; and two grandchildren.

James 'Burleigh' Grimes, 80, of Augusta, died at 11:30 p.m. Friday at Robertson County Health Care Center in Mount Olivet. He was a retired line crew foreman for Kentucky Utilities and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member and past commander of VFW Post 9535, Augusta, and Masonic Lodge No. 80 F&AM, Augusta. His wife, Carmen Grimes, died in 1992. A daughter, Judy Meyer, also preceded him in death.
Survivors include daughters, Donna McClanahan of Fostoria, Ohio, Phyllis Moreland of Cold Spring and Jan Grimes of Brooksville; a son, Stephen Grimes of Fostoria, Ohio; a brother, Charles Grimes of Cape Coral, Fla.; a sister, Ruth Vermillion of Aberdeen, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Warren A. Halvorson, 69, of Fort Mitchell, died Sunday in St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. He was a retired machinist for R.A. Jones.
Survivors include sons, Doug W. Halvorson and Jim S. Halvorson, both of Fort Mitchell; daughters, Cindy L. Carter of Benton and Judy L. Tarvin of Covington; and four grandchildren.

Norman Cecil Hazlewood, 74, of Fort Thomas, died at 3:30 a.m. Saturday in Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati. A Navy veteran of World War II, he retired in 1988 after working as a designer for several Cincinnati floral businesses.
Survivors include a brother, Alan Hazlewood of Hebron; and a sister, Mildred C. Hazlewood of Fort Thomas.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. James E. Heizer, 71, of Gallatin County, died Saturday in St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a retired machinist for Interlake Steel and also worked for L&N Railroad. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post No. 203 and VFW Post No. 6095.
Survivors include sons, David Heizer, Mike Heizer and Dennis Heizer, all of Independence, Robert Heizer of Bellevue, Gary Heizer of Latonia and Joseph Heizer of Walton; a daughter, Connie Brinkman of Erlanger; a sister, Ann Graven of Florence; and nine grandchildren.

Effie Leona Herrington, 96, of Covington, died Saturday in St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Florence United Methodist Church.
Survivors include daughters, Betty Pollitt of Covington and Geraldine Scherer of Cleveland; a sister, Irene Buckler of Florence; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, five great- great-grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

Thomas W. Herron, 58, of Lakeside Park, died at 9:10 a.m. Sunday at his residence. He was a conductor for CSX Railroad and an Army veteran.
He was a member of Mount Pleasant Christian Church, Williamstown; United Transportation Union Local No. 1353, where he was president and a delegate; and a former member of the U.S. Army European All-Star Basketball Team.
He is the second-leading scorer in history for the Holmes High School basketball team.
Survivors include his wife, Jane B. Herron; sons, Jeff Eastin of Erlanger and Conrad Eastin of Latonia; daughters, Cathy Herron of Wilder and Tammy Eastin of Latonia; and his mother, Josephine Martin of Covington; a sister, Betty Jo Klette of Florence; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. C. Wayne Hickman, 40, of Covington, died at 12:40 p.m. Saturday at his residence. He worked for Ross Laboratories, Columbus, Ohio, and formerly was a collections manager for a hotel association in Kansas City, Mo.
Survivors include his mother, M. Lee Hickman of Delhi, Ohio; a brother, Bill Hickman of Glendale, Ariz.; and sisters, Delonda Flowers of Cincinnati and Connie L. Mullins of Walton.

Elizabeth Ann 'Libby' Maley, 68, of Maysville, died at 5:55 p.m. Saturday in Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. She was a former bookkeeper for A.J. Toncray Enterprises, Maysville, and also worked as a bookkeeper for Moore-McHugh Auto Parts, Maysville. She was a member of St. Patrick Church, Maysville.
Survivors include sisters, Ella Mae Maley, Margaret Stambaugh, Catherine Pawsat and Nora Jane Cooney, all of Maysville, and Rose Marie Ryan of Westerville, Ohio; and a brother, John M. Maley of Cincinnati.

Horace McCutchen Sr., 63, of Covington, died 4:20 a.m. Saturday in St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was the retired owner of Brightwood car wash in Indianapolis.

Frank E. Neidenbach Sr., 61, of Fort Thomas, died at 2:45 a.m. Sunday in St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

James Earl Pavey, 67, of Portsmouth, Ohio, formerly of Newport, died Saturday in Southern Ohio Medical Center-Mercy Campus, Portsmouth. He was a retired Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War, and later operated his own appliance repair shop. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, Portsmouth.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Haken Pavey; a son, Scott Pavey of Fairfax, Va.; daughters, Shelly Conway of Hopkinton, Mass., Sandy Penn of Columbus, Ohio, and Nicki Conley Portsmouth, Ohio; a sister, Nita Betigheimer of Belleview; and four grandchildren.

Lambert E. Perkins, 86, of Owenton, died Saturday at his residence. He was a farmer and a retired employee for the Owen County Road Department, and a member of Keefer Christian Church. A daughter, Mildred Frances Perkins, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Bates Perkins; daughters, Karen McCormick and Brenda Turner, both of Owen County, Carolyn Ruth of Port Royal and Patricia Cuneo of Owenton; half- brothers, Harold Souder of Cincinnati and Hershel Souder of Fort Thomas; a half-sister, Donna Mae Souder of Amelia, Ohio; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Nancy Patrick Sellers, 63, of Florence, died Saturday in St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a counselor for the Women's Crisis Center, Covington; a former payroll clerk of Levi Strauss & Co., and a former clerk for the City of Union. She was a member of First Church of Christ, Burlington, and Eastern Star chapter in Knoxville, Tenn.
Survivors include her husband, Harry Lester Sellers; a son, Victor Sellers of Florence; and two grandchildren.

William A. Tingle, 84, of Louisville, died Friday in South West Hospital in Louisville. He was a retired bus driver and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Highland Baptist Church, Louisville, and Louisville Masonic Lodge. A son, Michael Tingle, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Dora Lee Stafford Tingle; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy White, 87, of Elsmere, died Saturday in Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport.
She was a retired clerk for Lazarus Department Store and a member of Elsmere Baptist Church. Her husband, Robert John 'Babe' White, died in October. Survivors include a daughter, Judith Moore of Cincinnati; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Elsmere Baptist Church.
