Jean "Foxy' DeMoisey, protege of Happy Chandler
Jean 'Foxy' DeMoisey loved telling stories about the legions of colorful people he knew in the world of politics and athletics.
'He knew a million stories, and most of them got better after he'd told them for awhile,' said his wife, Verner 'Vern' DeMoisey.
'My grandfather claimed Foxy knew a few thousand words, and that he'd use them all on occasion,' said Kentucky Attorney Gen. Ben Chandler, grandson of former governor Albert B. 'Happy' Chandler.
Mr. DeMoisey, 77, of Fort Thomas, died Sunday night in St. Luke Hospital East.
Mr. DeMoisey and the late Chandler, who also served as a U.S. senator and baseball commissioner, were close friends, touring Kentucky and the United States together, and referring to each other, as well as others they met, as 'pawd-ner.' Both were unabashed supporters of the University of Kentucky and its athletic teams.
Mr. DeMoisey became friends with Happy Chandler through his older brother, John 'Frenchy' DeMoisey, an All-American basketball player at UK. When Frenchy DeMoisey died in 1963, the man known as 'Fox,' 'Foxy' and 'Red Fox' took up the torch as Chandler's sidekick and confidante.
Happy Chandler disliked flying, but as a former commissioner, he attended numerous All-Star games and other baseball functions as far away as the West Coast. Mr. DeMoisey would drive him to and from the events, with the two swapping stories as they cruised along the highways, and Chandler sometimes singing, 'My Old Kentucky Home' over the CB radio.
A graduate of Highlands High School, Mr. DeMoisey also attended Walton High School and was a standout basketball player at both. He also played at Eastern Kentucky University, where he earned a bachelor's degree. He held a master's degree from the University of Kentucky. Mr. DeMoisey and his wife met at Eastern, and were married
54 years.
The nicknames 'Fox,' 'Foxy' or 'Red Fox,' came from the color of his red hair.
Mr. DeMoisey coached basketball at Kavanaugh High School in Anderson County, and was later principal and basketball coach at Anderson County High School. For some 35 years he was a pharmaceutical salesman with Wyeth & Ayerst Co. He retired in 1987, his wife said.
After Happy Chandler's death, Mr. DeMoisey was instrumental in forming the Chandler Foundation, which awards scholarships to high school youngsters, and honors other leading Kentuckians.
Mr. DeMoisey was president of the Chandler Foundation. He also was a member of the First Baptist Church, Fort Thomas.
Mr. DeMoisey never held or ran for a public office, but he was a master politician in his own right, said Ben Chandler. He had battled bone cancer for a number of months. 'Not very many people had as much spunk as he did,' said Chandler.
He also leaves a son, Jean Fox DeMoisey of Louisville; daughter, Jan Walton DeMoisey of Atlanta; brother, Truitt DeMoisey of Walton; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Carpenter cemetery at Richwood.

Robert Ashcraft Sr., 73, of Bellevue, died Monday at his residence.
He was a retired self-employed carpenter and a member of New Hope Christian Center, Newport.
Survivors include his wife, Lilly Mae Ashcraft; sons, Bob Ashcraft of Butler, Eugene Ashcraft of Fort Thomas, Andy Ashcraft of Bellevue and Jack Ashcraft of Covington; a stepson, George Thompson of Fort Thomas; a daughter, Alma Porter of Independence; a brother, Harry Ashcraft of Dayton, Ky.; sisters, Florence Miller and Bertha Owens, both of Newport; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.
Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Shirley Ruth Barr, 84, of Bellevue, died at 5:30 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
She was a retired office worker for Checker Stores.
Survivors include a daughter, Marian Barr of Bellevue; sons, William G. Barr of Cold Spring and Garold Robert Barr of Newport; a sister, Elverda Buhr of Southgate; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport.
Burial will be in Hillside Chapel Cemetery, Cincinnati.
Edward 'Jack' Berg, 78, of Newport, died at 4:30 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
He was retired from Wiedemann Brewery and was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. His wife, Ruby Berg, died in 1969.
Survivors include his fiance, Mae Highhouse, of Newport.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Corpus Christi Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Lois Culp, 68, of Burgin, died Sunday at her residence.
She was a homemaker and a member of Shawnee Run Baptist Church. She also worked as an in-store food demonstrator at Kroger's and Sloan's Market in Danville.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph Culp Sr.; sons, Ralph Culp Jr. and Timothy Culp, both of Mercer County, and John David Culp of Boone County; sisters, Norma Jean Turner and Louise Williamson, both of Lexington; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Wednesday at Alexander and Royalty Funeral Home, Harrodsburg. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today and from 7 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Shawnee Run Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mary Virginia Doremus, 89, of Florence, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. She was a homemaker.
Her husband, Frank S. Doremus, died in 1969.
Survivors include a son, Douglas S. Doremus of Baton Rouge, La.; daughters, Elizabeth D. Frye of Walton and Virginia D. Rottman of Sun City Center, Fla.; sisters, Hazel Jones of St. Paul, Minn., and Mabel Samuels of Clearwater, Fla.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Clarence Earl Easton, 87, of Florence, died Friday at Woodspoint Nursing Home in Florence.
He was a retired baggage handler for TWA Airlines.
Survivors include his wife, Mabel Sorrell Easton; daughters, Wilma Moore of Melbourne, Fla., and Donna Walton of Cottonwood, Ariz.; sons, Joseph Daryl Easton of Melbourne, Fla., and James 'Jimmy' Easton of Burlington; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon today at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery.
Betty Jane Fooks, 62, of Cromwell, died at 6:08 a.m. Sunday at her residence.
She was a clerk for the Kentucky Department of Revenue and a member of Hartford Christian Church, Hartford. Sons Gary Wayne Fooks and Glenn Wesley Fooks both preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, William Stewart Fooks; sons, Mark Anthony Fooks, David Fooks and Christopher Morgan Fooks, all of Cromwell; a stepson, William S. Fooks Jr. of Paris; her mother, Mary Alice Morgan of Maysville; a sister, Helen Josephine Blake of Manchester, Ohio; a half-brother, Joseph Morgan Jr. of Maysville; five grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren and one stepgreat-grandchild.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mays Lick Cemetery, Mays Lick.
Rev. Edgar Gullett, 72, of Covington, died at 2:40 a.m. Monday at his residence.
He was a minister at Apostolic Lighthouse Church in Latonia, where he was a charter member. He was a retired auto mechanic for Sears and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He also was a former Covington auxiliary police officer and chaplain and served as the state bishop of the Kentucky Apostolic Holiness Church.
Survivors include his wife, Grace Gullett; a daughter, Loretta Lynn Turner of Covington; and sisters, Martha Gullett of Guage and Eliza Miller of Knox, Ind.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Apostolic Lighthouse Church, Latonia. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Horace McCutchen Sr., 63, of Covington, died 4:20 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.
He was the retired owner of Brightwood car wash in Indianapolis.
Survivors include his wife, Hattie Bogan McCutchen; sons, Horace McCutchen Jr., of Indianapolis, Cecil Bogan McCutchen of Newport, Gregory T. McCutchen of Dallas and Michael T. McCutchen of Covington; daughter, Blanche McCutchen of Dallas and Arlena Francis McCutchen of Indianapolis; brothers, Samuel T. McCutchen of Indianapolis and Bernard T. McCutchen of San Antonio; sisters, Jeanne Cousins and Belva Brown, both of Indianapolis, and Doris Jones of Fremont, Ohio; 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Bert 'Dude' Nixon, 77, of Covington, died at 5:10 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
He retired in 1977 after 31 years as a printer for Burroughs Corp., Cincinnati. He was a member of American Legion Post 201, Latonia, and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Betty Nixon; daughters, Linda Kidwell, Kim Gurren and Cherae Sears, all of Florence, and Merrlene Nixon of Frankfort; sisters, Katherine Wulfhorst of Erlanger and Betty Reagan of Florence; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation began there at 11:30 a.m. today. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Marguarite Robinson, 78, of Newport, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.

George W. Rogers, 77, of Independence, died at 4:16 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
He was a retired salesman for Melvin Supply Company and a member of Faith Community United Methodist Church, Independence. His wife, Betty Jane Rogers, died in 1995.
Survivors include sons, George W. Rogers Jr. and Kenneth L. Rogers, both of Alexandria, and Barry J. Hampton of Burlington; a daughter, Joy L. Hampton of Taylor Mill; a sister, Martha Sauter of Cincinnati; a brother, Thomas Rogers of Latonia; and nine grandchildren.

Velma M. Simmons, 79, of Owenton, formerly of Worthville, died Sunday at Owenton Manor Health Care Center in Owenton.
She formerly was a clerk for Lerman Brothers Department Store in Carrollton. She also was a bookkeeper for East End Lumber Co. and Grobmyer Coal and Lumber Co. And she formerly owned and operated Simmons Grocery in Worthville. She was a member of Worthville Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher for 35 years. She also was a member of the Worthville Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. Her husband, Robert Paul Simmons, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Donna Hassan of Florence, Barbara Boswell of Carrollton and Anita Wainscott of Wheatley; a sister, Louise Spillman of Carrollton; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in I. O. O. F. Cemetery, Carrollton.
