Covington's William F. Rechtin, created scholarship for parish

William F. Rechtin, who believed so strongly in the importance of education he established and managed a scholarship fund for high-school parishioners at St. Benedict Church in Covington, died at 8:35 a.m. Monday in his home. He was 79.

Mr. Rechtin grew up in West Covington and graduated from Covington Latin High School. He went into the Army Air Corps during World War II.

When he returned, he worked for Littleford Brothers in Cincinnati as a service manager and went to night school at the University of Cincinnati, where he studied mechanical engineering. He earned his degree in the mid-1950s.

He married Peggy C. Bodde Rechtin, in 1946. They had five children, who were raised in Covington.

In 1970, Mr. Rechtin went to work for Southeastern Equipment Co. in Boone County, where he retired as a manager in 1989.

"He was a very well-organized, clear-thinking person and very deep-thinking," said a son, Richard Rechtin of Union. "He was very logical."

"He was always a teacher, always helping his kids understand things."

Mr. Rechtin served in a number of capacities, including president, for the Holy Name Society, a men's organization that helped manage the financial affairs for St. Benedict, as well as raise funds and organize social events.

He also served on the St. Benedict Finance Committee and was a math and finance tutor at Holy Family School.

Mr. Rechtin started the St. Benedict Holy Name Scholarship Fund for high-school parishioners at St. Benedict. Using donations he collected, he invested the money and managed it himself, his son said. Today the fund is worth more than $100,000.

Richard Rechtin said his father first got involved in the church because his children all went to the school. His commitment did not end when his children were out of school.

"I guess he got so involved and interested in the parish and neighborhood that he wanted to continue to make sure he could do everything he could to make sure things went well," Richard Rechtin said.

"He felt that he owed the parish something, and he couldn't pay them in money, but he wanted to pay them in some kind of way, so he did that in volunteer work."

Mr. Rechtin also was a member of the Austinburg Neighborhood Association and was on the board of the Brighton Center.

He enjoyed woodworking in his free time.
