Melvin Metzger, died working Alexandria polls
Melvin R. Metzger was doing one of his favorite things Tuesday, working at the voting place at the Alexandria Fairgrounds. It was shortly after the polls opened at 6 a.m. that he collapsed, apparently suffering a heart attack.
Mr. Metzger, who was 77, was pronounced dead at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He had had heart problems for several years.
Mr. Metzger was a native of Bracken County and a graduate of the old St. James High School in Brooksville. He later attended Villa Madonna College, then got a job with the Kentucky Department of Em ployment Services. He worked for the employment services in Covington for 39 years, retiring in 1983 as a senior interview er.
"Part of the reason he loved that job was because it gave him a chance to help people better their lives," said his wife, Mary Margaret Metzger.
The Metzgers lived in Dayton for 25 years, where Mr. Metzger served on the Dayton Planning and Zoning Commission and helped in the development of the flood levee and the Dayton Industrial Park. The couple moved to Alexandria in 1980.
Mrs. Metzger said her husband had worked at the voting polls for about 10 years and enjoyed it because it gave him a chance to talk to people, both old friends and new acquaintances.
In his spare time, Mr. Metzger liked to work newspaper crossword puzzles and to work in his yard. He had to give up the yard work about three years ago when knee surgery limited his ability to kneel.
He and his wife began volunteering at the Henry Hosea House in Newport earlier this year. He also counted collection mon ey every week from Sunday churches ser vices at St. Mary Church in Alexandria.
