Augusta's John Schweitzer, mail carrier
John J. "Junior" Schweitzer managed to retain his sense of humor and willingness to engage his friends through good times and bad.
"He was a lot of fun. He had a lot of friends. He was well-liked," said his wife of 57 years, Mildred Sweeney Schweitzer.
Mr. Schweitzer, a retired mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service, died Tuesday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. He was 78.
Mr. Schweitzer was an Army veteran of World War II who fought in Europe but refused to let the war harm his relationships with his family and friends, his wife said.
A native of Augusta, Mr. Schweitzer met his future wife while both were students at Augusta High School. She said she appreciated his sense of humor.
"He was always making jokes. And he liked to play cards," Mrs. Schweitzer said.
After their marriage they continued to live in Augusta and raise a son. "He was a good father," she said.
Mr. Schweitzer was a member of St. Augustine Church in Augusta, where he was a former member of the Parish Council.
He was a past president, secretary and treasurer of the Augusta Rotary Club, a past president of the local chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and a past commander of VFW Post No. 9535, Augusta. He also was a member of the Kentucky Farm Bureau.
Other survivors include a son, Edward Schweitzer of Oxford, Ohio; and one grandson.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Augustine Church, Augusta. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Augusta. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Washington.
Memorials are suggested to St. Augustine School, Fourth St., Augusta, Ky. 41002.
Charles Arns, 86, formerly of Ludlow, died at 3:10 a.m. today at Woodspoint nursing home in Florence.
Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.
William H. Davies III, 43, of Alexandria, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was an electronics specialist.
Survivors include his mother, Martha Ziegler Davies of High land Heights.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Rondal Fortner, 67, of Will iamstown, died at 9:15 a.m. Tues day at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired plant manager with Kenner Products Co., Cincinnati, a former plant manager with McGregor-Brunswick Co., and a former production supervisor with Grant County Manufacturing Co., Williamstown. He was a former employee of T&W Ford Sales and Service, Williams town, and a member of Lawrenceville Baptist Church, Grant County.
Survivors include his wife, Rosemary Huffman Fortner; his mother, Sylvia Poe Fortner of Williamstown; a brother, Eugene Fortner of Florence; and sisters, June Flurkey of Cody, Wyo., and Wanda Dunn of Williamstown.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Fri day at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery. Evelyn J. Frost, 77, of Union, died Wednesday at her home. She was a homemaker. A son, David Roy Frost, died in 1972.
Survivors include her husband, Roy C. Frost; a son, Tim R. Frost of Union; and one grandson.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Jay Gallagher, 70, of Falmouth, died Monday in Orlando, Fla. He was a retired employee of Wadsworth Electric Co., Crescent Springs. Sons, Lynn Thomas Gallagher and Lee Dexter Gallagher, both died in 1950.
Survivors include his wife, Carletta Jenkins Gallagher; a son, Larry Gallagher of Falmouth; a daughter, Diana Mae Bruin of Falmouth; brothers, Jack Gallagher of Peach Grove, Hank Gallagher of Sanford and Donnie Gallagher of Falmouth; sisters, Sue Baker of Grants Lick, Norma Jean Sydnor of Orlando, Fla., and Odella Perkins of Walton; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Turner Ridge Baptist Church, Pendleton County. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth, and from 1 p.m. Saturday until the time of services at the church. Jack Hensley, 62, of Kenton, died at 6 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired track foreman with CSX Railroad.
Survivors include his wife, Nellie Malloy Hensley; a stepson, Roy Baker of Taylor Mill; step daughters, Ann Richardson of Taylor Mill, Donna Hensley of Benton and Betty Jo Setters of Covington; brothers, Bill Hensley of Latonia, Denny Hensley and Marvin Hensley, both of Taylor Mill, and Edward Hensley of Benton; a sister, Eula Mae Ponder of Taylor Mill; five step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

Odis Jacobs, 65, of Independence, died Monday at his home. He was a stone mason with Odis Jacobs Masonry.

Edward E. "Snix" King, 68, of Erlanger, died at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at Drake Center, Cincinnati. He was a retired custodian with Cincinnati Gas & Electric, and a member of Bradley Lodge No. 123 F&AM in Independence; Indra Consistory Scottish Rite in Covington; Kento-Boo Baptist Church, Florence; and was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include brothers, Raymond King and Neal King, both of Erlanger, Marion "Bud" King of Taylor Mill and Mel King of Krum, Texas; and a sister, Frances Eggleston of Taylor Mill.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Scottish Rite services at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery.
Loretta A. Ryan Laidlaw, 74, of Covington, died at 4:05 p.m. Tuesday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Mother of God Church, Covington. Her first husband, Joseph E. Ryan, died in 1962. Her second husband, David Laidlaw, died in 1994.
Survivors include a son, Charles E. Ryan of Florence; a stepdaughter, Debbie Massingale of Florence; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Friday at Mother of God Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight, and from 11 to 11:45 a.m. Friday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Robert James Lloyd, 84, of Melbourne, died at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a re tired mill worker with Interlake Steel, Newport, a member of Disabled American Veterans, and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a sister, Betty Moher of Melbourne; and brothers, Earl Lloyd of Alexandria and Tom Lloyd of Melbourne.

Mary Louise Rankin, 55, of Union, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker.

Julie Rothwell Reckers, 33, of Covington, died Sunday at her home. She was an insurance adjuster with Mariemont Insurance Co., Cincinnati, and a member of First Christian Church, Covington.
Survivors include her hus band, Jeffery Reckers Sr.; a son, Jeffery Reckers Jr. of Covington; brothers, Charles G. Wilson of West Harrison, Ind., and William Rothwell of Milford, Ohio; sisters, Deborah Mullins of Taylor Mill, Kimberly Adkins of Florence and Eadena Laine of Covington; and stepsisters, Margaret Laine and Bonnie Oakes, both of Cincinnati, and Rebecca Hornsby of Latonia.

George "Tip" Richardson, 73, of Taylor Mill, died Tuesday at his home. He was owner of Latonia Blacktop Co. and a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church, Covington, where he was a deacon. He was a member of the Covington Board of Adjustment, Kenton County Zoning and Planning Commission and the Kenton County School Board. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Richardson; daughters, Terri Capek and Donna Richardson, both of Taylor Mill, Toni Coldiron of Elsmere and Debi McKinley of Demossville; sisters, Joyce Carter of Melbourne, Fla., and Norma Dorsey of Walton; a brother, Ted Richardson of Cincinnati; and seven grandchildren.

Chester Lee Sargent, 70, of Williamstown, died Wednesday in an automobile accident in Grant County.

Grace M. Talbert, 77, of Fort Wright, died at 11:33 a.m. Monday at Palmetto-Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, S.C. She was a retired administrative specialist with the Kenton County Court. Her husband, James C. Talbert, died in 1992. A brother, Andrew J. Wulfeck Jr., died in September.
Survivors include sons, James C. "Jay" Talbert of Edgewood, Mark J. Talbert of Winnsboro, S.C., and Kevin P. Talbert of Fort Wright; brothers, James A. Wulfeck of Villa Hills, William M.
