Outdoorsman John Sturgill, put family first
John Henry Sturgill loved to hunt and fish and taught his children how to do the same.
A daughter, Diana Sander of Taylor Mill, re called walking in the woods with her father while he hunted for rabbits and squirrels.
"He's the one who taught me everything. I was close to my dad. We stood behind him and walked with him while he hunted," Ms. Sander said.
Mr. Sturgill 81, of Latonia, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a retired machinist with Overhead Door Co.
Ms. Sander said she misses the time she had with her father.
"He had smart hands and knew how to do just about anything," Ms. Sander said. "And he was married
for 47 years. He had a good mar riage and really loved his family."
Mr. Sturgill was an outspoken man. But he always kept his family close to his heart, his daughter said.
Mr. Sturgill was a native of Berea. His family collected clocks, toys and other keepsakes from 1917, the year when Mr. Sturgill was born.
A son, William Sturgill of Henry, Ky., said he has taught his own children many of the lessons his father taught him.
"I've learned hard work and how to live off the land," William Sturgill said.
Other survivors include his wife, Beatrice Sturgill; sons, Larry Sturgill of Walton and Jeff Cox of New Richmond, Ohio; daughters, Darlene Schewene of Independence, and Jeanie Case, of Taylor Mill; brothers, Hardin Sturgill of Be rea and George Sturgill of Cincinnati; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 8 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Charles W. Arns, 86, of Ludlow, died at 3:10 a.m. Thursday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. He was a retired foreman with the car-cleaning department at Union Terminal, Cincinnati, and a member of Sts. Boniface and James Church, Ludlow. His wife, Sue E. Arns, died in 1989.
Survivors include sons, Charles D. Arns of Cincinnati, Richard Arns and Dennis Arns, both of Florence; 12 grandchild ren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sts. Boniface and James Church. Vis itation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Herman Lee Fryman, 85, of Cynthiana, died Wednesday at his home. He was a retired farm er and a member of Elmarch United Methodist Church, Harri son County.
Survivors include his wife, Flossie J. Platt Fryman; sons, William J. Fryman of Paris, Gar nett Wayne Fryman and Lorenza "Lee" Fryman, both of Harrison County; a daughter, Anita "Jean" Buckler of Mount Olivet; a half-sister, Ruby Young of Haysville, N.C.; 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Sat urday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.
Arizona Gross, 83, of Newport, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Church of God, Newport.
Survivors include sons, McKinley Gross of Cincinnati, Earl Gross of Newport and Doris Gross of Bellevue; daughters, Helma Case of Independence, Patsy Bowin of Grant County and Mary Turner of Newport; 33 grandchildren, 68 great-grandchildren and 32 great-great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Floyd Howard, 67, of Florence, died at 1:15 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Hospice Unit, Covington.
Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Brenda Carol Smith John son, 45, of Turners Station, died Wednesday at her parents' home in Carroll County of complications of cancer. She was a former inspector with Varity Dayton-Walther Corp., Carrollton, and a member of English Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Tony Johnson; a daughter, Candida Henry of Carrollton; sons, Shawn Henry of Prescott, Ariz., and Nathan Henry of Car rollton; her parents, Edward and Agnes Hunter Smith of Turners Station; a sister, Linda Marie Smith of Carrollton; and a broth er, Gayle Lloyd Smith of Turners Station.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in English Cemetery.
Bertha "Granny" McCarter, 98, of Butler, died Thursday at Clermont Nursing Home in Milford, Ohio. She was a homemaker. Six children preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Robert McCarter of Quartsite, Ariz.; daughters, Dessie Parkinson of Cincinnati, Nellie Kline and Dora Rogers, both of Louisville, Cordelia Dietzen of Austin, Texas, Mary Taylor of Auburn, Ind., and Nannie Erwin of Campton; 39 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and five great-great- grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Butler Cemetery.
Julie Rothwell Reckers, 33, of Covington, died Sunday at her home. She was an insurance adjuster with Mariemont Insurance Co., Cincinnati, and a member of First Christian Church, Covington.
Survivors include her husband, Jeffery Reckers Sr.; a son, Jeffery Reckers Jr. of Covington; brothers, Charles G. Wilson of West Harrison, Ind., sisters, Deborah Mullins of Taylor Mill, Kimberly Adkins of Florence and Eadena Gribble of Covington; a stepbrother, William Rothwell of Milford, Ohio; and stepsisters, Margaret Laine and Bonnie Oakes, both of Cincinnati, and Rebecca Hornsby of Latonia.
Services are at 1 p.m. today at First Christian Church, Covington. Visitation began at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Sara V. Rouse, 90, of Louis ville, formerly of Florence, died at 4:15 a.m. Thursday at Masonic Home in Louisville. She was a homemaker and a member of Florence Baptist Church. Her husband, Lloyd C. Rouse, died in 1972.
Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Baker of Florence; sons, Randall Rouse of Winter Garden, Fla., and Roger Rouse of Louisville; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Chester Lee Sargent, 70, of Williamstown, died Wednesday in an auto accident at the intersection of Ky. 36 and Moon Road in Grant County. He was a farmer.
Survivors include sons, Jeff Sargent and Steve Sargent, both of Covington; a brother, Gilbert Sargent of Covington; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Pendleton County.
Luanne Denise Sharp-Sims, 45, Carmel Valley, Calif., formerly of Covington, died of cancer Wednesday at her home. She was manager of the Wills Fargo restaurant in Carmel Valley, Calif., a past board of directors clerk with the Carmel Valley Fire Protection District, and a member of the Carmel Valley Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, William H. Sims; a son, Joshua Davis Butte of Carmel Valley; and her parents, Floyd H. and Laverne Sharp of Florence.

Alma E. Smith, 82, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died at 5:50 a.m. Thursday at Riverview Community Home, Cincinnati.
She was a retired payroll clerk with Whitaker General Medical Co., and a member of Mother of God Church and St. John Church, both in Covington.
Survivors include a son, William F. Smith of Fairfield, Ohio; a sister, Sister Mary Valaria, O.S.B., of Villa Hills; and one grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mother of God Church. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Cecil Webster Jr., 67, of Florence, died at 2 a.m. Thursday on southbound I-75 near Fort Wright from a heart attack.
He was a self-employed, retired salesman. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Johns Webster; a son, Tim Webster of Fort Thomas; brothers, Bill Webster of Butler, Donald Webster of Independence, and Edward Webster of Delhi; a sister, Betty Snyder of Delhi; and a grandson.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home in Williamstown. Visitation will be there from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday. Cremation will follow at the Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati.
