Flossie White, musician, "super' mom

Flossie Hogle White, 91, of California, hosted 70 family members for a Christmas day dinner each year and often entertained them with her harmonica playing.

She had a talent for the harmonica and loved to play hymns at Grants Lick Baptist Church, where she was a member. Even after a stroke 1 1/2 years ago, she couldn't talk, but she could still play the harmonica, said her daughter, Shirley Bray of California.

"Her harmonica was a very important thing to her," Mrs. Bray said.

"She played at any outing, any event. She even did it in competition and won."

Mrs. White died Tuesday at her home.

"She was just a super person," her daughter said. "We're just so thankful we had her all these years. We know we've been truly blessed."

Mrs. White was the last surviving member of the Charley Hogle family, which lost seven children in 21 days to spinal meningitis in 1906. Mrs. White was born a year after the tragedy.

"It was a terrible thing," Mrs. Bray said. "They couldn't have a memorial or anything. It was just so contagious. They'd have to take them to the cemetery, and they'd come back and another one would be gone."
