Raymond Rammelsberg Jr., helped others with alcohol problems
Raymond Rammelsberg Jr. was proud of his 25 years of sobriety. As an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous, he dedicated himself to staying sober - and helping others do the same.
"He sponsored a lot of men," said his wife, Barbara Knarr Rammelsberg. "This one man had a hard time getting up in the morning, and my husband would get up in the morning and go pick him up to make sure he got to work.
"It was nothing for him to get a call at 3 in the morning from someone wanting to take a drink."
Mr. Rammelsberg, a lifelong Newport resident, died at 4:15 a.m. Monday at his home after an extended illness. He was 71.
The Newport High School graduate was a retired mail supervisor with the U.S. Postal Service. After spending 33 years with the post office in Newport, he went to work in the mail room at Northern Kentucky University. He helped the university set up a bulk mail center and worked there for 13 years. He finally retired at age 69.
"He loved to work. He loved being around people," Mrs. Rammelsberg said.
Mr. Rammelsberg, an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, married
his wife in 1950. He went to college at Morehead University and graduated with a degree in business.
"It was a bad time for jobs and so he tried a little bit of everything," his wife said. "But then he finally got on at the post office."
The couple had four children. His sons played football for the Newport school district, and Mr. Rammelsberg sometimes announced the games.
In the early 1970s, he recognized he had a problem with alcohol and joined Alcoholics Anonymous. He dedicated himself to getting sober, and he also helped others battle the disease, his wife said.
"AA is a spiritual program," Mrs Rammelsberg said. "You have to turn your life over to God, and you have to be able to give, and the more you give, the more you receive."
He also was a member of Holy Spirit Church in Newport and volunteered at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
