Alexandria's mayor J. Patrick Fanning dies
Alexandria Mayor J. Patrick Fanning, who served on the Alexandria City Council for more than two decades, has died. He was 75.
Mr. Fanning died of leukemia at 4:40 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East.
Mr. Fanning had served in his present post for five years. He was not seeking re-election.
"As a public official, he was a true gentleman and very professional," said Campbell County Judge-Executive Ken Paul, who had known Mr. Fanning for decades.
"He had the city of Alexandria in his heart. When other people were worried about the twigs, he had the vision to see the whole forest."
Mr. Fanning entered politics in the early 1970s.
"We had six children," said his wife, Joan.
"He was part of the community, and he wanted to help. He wanted to make sure it would be a good place for his kids to be raised."
Mr. Fanning often was a mediator on council.
"He tried to look at both sides and work it out with everyone," said Paul. "You could see the pride he had in being the mayor of the city and in all the growth it had."
Former Alexandria Mayor Ray Hildebrand said Mr. Fanning was tireless in his devotion to the city.
"He saw it develop from a quaint little town into what we have today," Hildebrand said."He was always there, trying to steer it in the right direction."
Mr. Fanning was a traveling salesman for Dayton Supply, a job he held until his death.
"He enjoyed people; he enjoyed meeting people," Mrs. Fanning said.
Hildebrand described him as "typical Irish. He was a great guy to be around. Great sense of humor, all the positive things," he said.
He met his wife in England during World War II, when he was a soldier. They married
and returned to Alexandria to raise their family.
"Whatever he did, he tried to do the very best he could do," Mrs. Fanning said. "That was a maxim we tried to teach our children."
Mr. Fanning had surgery in April and a triple heart by-pass in July.
Doctors later learned he had leukemia.
