Former Anderson Ferry owner Richard L. Kottmyer, traveled world
Richard Lee Kottmyer and his family left a historical legacy for Northern Kentucky that has continued for more than 130 years.
Mr. Kottmyer, 75, of Constance, died Wednesday in Dakar, Senegal. His flight from Johannesburg, South Africa, to the U.S. was diverted there after he was stricken with an apparent heart attack on the plane.
Mr. Kottmyer and his wife Ruth traveled extensively since his retirement in 1986, according to son-in-law, Bill McPeak.
"They traveled throughout the world and had been to every continent, including Antarctica. They had been in South Africa for three weeks," said McPeak.
"He died very quickly and very quietly, and doing what he loved to do. He and his family were part of the Cincinnati area for a long, long time," said McPeak.
Mr. Kottmyer's family operated the Anderson Ferry from just after the Civil War until the mid-1980s. Paul Anderson, no relation to the original founders, was a long-time employee of the Kottmyers, and now operates the ferry.
Anderson's memories of Mr. Kottmyer and Mr. Kottmyer's father, Henry, go back to his own childhood years. "I learned a lot from them," said Anderson, recalling that Mr. Kottmyer was his Sunday school superintendent at the Constance Christian Church.
Mr. Kottmyer was also a former foreman for Interlake Steel Co., and an Army veteran of World War II. He served as an infantryman in Germany, and participated in the Battle of the Bulge, said McPeak.
Mr. Kottmyer was also a member of Hebron Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, American Legion, OES at Florence, Boys & Girls Ranch Club, and Constance Christian Church.
