Elsmere's Robert "Babe' White, wood-worker, athlete
Robert "Babe" White, 93, was one of the oldest lifelong residents of Elsmere.
During the city's centennial celebration in 1996, he was honored in a special ceremony at city hall. He rode in the city's parade, and was presented with a plaque and roses.
He was one of seven children, and the last of the siblings to die.
"They were a close family," said Mr. White's only child, Judith Moore of Cincinnati. "Most stayed within walking distance of each other their entire lives."
Mr. White died Sunday at the Highlands of Fort Thomas Health Care Center.
The Lloyd High School student was an avid sportsman in his youth. He played basketball and baseball for church league teams - and continued to play baseball into his 50s.
He was the top hitter for his church team, with a .423 batting average, his daughter said.
He married
his wife, Dorothy Schlueter White of Elsmere, in 1932, and made a living as a wood-worker for Western Tray & Case, a display-case manufacturer in Cincinnati.
He eventually became part-owner of the company, and worked there for more than 30 years.
He continued to work for the company after it was sold and renamed American Tray & Case. He did not retire until he was 72.
"He was pretty eccentric, actually," Ms. Moore said of her father. "He just didn't think you needed anything new until something was worn out.
"But he was never stingy with his money. He put me through the university. He worked hard for a living, and saved his money for a rainy day - he had that kind of ethic."
Mr. White was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, gathering berries and nuts and working in his garden. He also enjoyed walking, his daughter said.
Mr. White also was a charter member of the Elsmere Baptist Church, where he served as the mission treasurer.
Mr. and Mrs. White were able to live independently in their home until late August. Then, each had a stroke within four days of the other, and they moved to a nursing home.
