Paula Reilly, credited faith in cancer fight
When Paula J. Reilly of Covington was first diagnosed with cancer, doctors predicted she had just a year or two to live.
But Mrs. Reilly was to live another 20 years - and give God the glory for every one of them.
"She had a lot of faith," said her son, David Reilly of Crescent Springs.
"She basically wouldn't take no for an answer."
Nearly as amazing as Mrs. Reilly's longevity, her son said, was her attitude during the decades she coped with multiple operations, brain tumors, and finally, strokes.
Mrs. Reilly was a retail sales clerk, an active member of her church and doted on her family.
"Even though she fought cancer throughout, she still led a spiritual life and a happy life," said Reilly.
"She never got depressed or blamed other people. That's why we think she's a special person. This disease never got her down."
Mrs. Reilly died early Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. She was 58.
Mrs. Reilly was born and reared in Covington.
She loved to make crafts and cook, her son said.
She baked cakes for people and made clothing for her grandchildren's dolls.
She was a clerk at Ben Franklin in Latonia for 16 years and later worked at HQ-Home Quarters in Boone County.
She liked her jobs because she liked people, her son said.
"She was very vibrant," he said.
"She loved to meet people and find out about people and do things for people.
"It didn't matter what their backgrounds were, how rich or poor they were, or what their nationality was."
Mrs. Reilly was a member of the Mother of God Choral Club for 40 years.
Her husband, James T. Reilly, died in 1989.
Besides her son, Mrs. Reilly is survived by daughters, Karen Reilly of Highland Heights and Melissa Bey of Covington; her mother, Pauletta Sanders of Latonia; sisters, Barbara Poore of Covington and Shirley Armstrong of Petersburg; and five grandchildren.
