Realtor George Robert Powers, served family, Grant schools, county
George Robert Powers never let his considerable energies go to waste.
Dedicated to family, faith, business and his community, he left a legacy of hard work evident by a long list of achievements.
"His hobby was his real estate business second and his family first," said Bill Burke, a son-in-law from Carpinteria, Calif.
Mr. Powers, 79, of Williamstown, died at 6:50 p.m. Wednesday at Hospice Care Center, Lexington. He was a real estate broker with Milton Real Estate Co., Dry Ridge; a former owner of Powers Home and Auto Store and a Firestone tire dealership; co-founder of Tire City Inc., Williamstown; a former member of National Tire Dealer's Association; and a former Grant County Magistrate for District No. 1.
Mr. Powers was born in Verona and spent his whole life in Grant and Boone counties except for his service in the Army during World War II. He served in Europe.
Mr. Powers was a former member and chairman of Williamstown Board of Education, and a member of Robert P. McLachlin American Legion Post No. 137 in Williamstown, and Williamstown United Methodist Church, where he was a church trustee and was on the church administrative council.
Mr. Burke said his father-in-law made many friends through his business dealings and service on the school board.
He was a charter member of Williamstown Kiwanis Club, a former lieutenant governor of Kentucky-Tennessee District of the Kiwanis International. The Kiwanis honored him with several awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award and the 1988 Kiwanis Legion of Honor Award.
He was a member of Northern Kentucky Board of Realtors, a former member of Williamstown Rotary Club, a charter member and past president of Grant County Chamber of Commerce, and was co-chairman of Gov. Martha Layne Collins' gubernatorial campaign in Grant County.
He came to know his home counties well.
"I used to love riding around the back country of Grant and Boone counties getting a geography lesson from him. he seemed to know every bend in the road," Burke said. "He was just great to be with and a gentleman right to the end."
"I was just lucky to have him as a father (in-law) in the last 10 years of his life."
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Taylor Powers; daughters, Tanya Conrad of Dry Ridge and Georganne Powers Burke of Carpinteria, Calif.; a son, Richard A. Powers of Lexington; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Williamstown United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown, and after 1 p.m. Sunday at the church. Burial will be Williamstown Cemetery. Gilbert Ray Baynum, 69, of Melbourne, Fla., formerly of Erlanger, died Sept. 23 in Melbourne. He was a former employee of A-1 Auto Service in Fairfield, Ohio.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Baynum; sons, Mark Baynum of Dayton, Ohio, Timothy Baynum and Tyrell Baynum both of Union, and Jude Baynum and Gerald Baynum, both of Florence; a daughter, Paula Wilson of Newport; a stepson, Terry Philpot of Pineville; a sister, Alice Gray of Erlanger; and 11 grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Memorials are suggested to Gilbert Ray Baynum Memorial Fund, Fifth Third Bank, 590 Buttermilk Pike, Crescent Springs, Ky. 41017. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
Clara M. Blair, 89, of Newport, died Thursday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Clarence W. Blair, died in 1984.
Survivors include nieces, Ruth Gantt of Loveland, Ohio, Mary Leurch of Fort Thomas, and Eva Petry of Holland, Mich.
Services will be at noon Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 10:30 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Thelma J. Cash, 82, of Dry Ridge, died Thursday at Grant Manor Nursing Home, Williamstown.
Arrangements are pending at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.
Lauren Michelle Gabbard, 12, of Florence, died Wednesday at Children's Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a sixth-grader at Gray Middle School, where she was a member of the school band. She was a member of the Ockerman Elementary school basketball team last year, and was a cheerleader for the Boone County Steelers peewee football team.
A sister, April Y. Gabbard, died in 1984.
Survivors include her parents, Tom and Rhonda Gabbard; brothers, Tommy Gabbard and Tyler Gabbard, both at home; and grandparents, Wayne Vires and Ginny Vires, both of Elsmere, and Dorothy Gabbard of Fort Thomas.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Corinne Frances McCormac, 92, of Verona, died Wednesday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a retired teacher with New Haven and Crittenden elementary schools and a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, Verona.
Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn Didier of Annandale, Va.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona. Memorials are suggested to Verona Life Squad, 14924 Walton-Verona Road, Verona, Ky. 41092.
Charles Albert Pulliam, 88, of Berry, died Wednesday at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington. He was owner of Pulliam Garage, Berry. His wife, Ruby Pearl Pulliam, died in 1996.
Survivors include a son, Jerry Wayne Pulliam of Frankfort; brothers, Jodie Pulliam of Berry and Claude Pulliam of Williamstown; and three grandsons.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.
Rita Schuler, 65, of Ft. Wright, died at 10:40 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Herman J. Thaman, 92, of Florence, died Wednesday at his daughter's home in Florence. He was a retired shift foreman with Bavarian Brewery Co., Covington, and a member of VFW Post No. 4, Union, and St. Henry Church, Elsmere. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include daughters, Mary Roszman of Erlanger, Jean Conley and Irma Roenker, both of Florence, and Mildred Green of Masury, Ohio; a sister, Blanche Schmoltz of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Church, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Joyce Ann Weidner, 59, of Walton, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was an executive general sales officer with Shillito's department store.
Survivors include her husband, William H. Weidner; a son, Timothy Gilbert of Covington; a daughter, Vicki Ann Warrington of Verona; her parents, Claud and Ruth Adkins of Florence; sisters, Kathy Gabbard of Erlanger, Judy Moreland of Florence and Nancy Reed of Batavia, Ohio; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Wilma J. Workman, 84, of Hebron, died at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a supervisor in the billing department at Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co. Her husband, Robert A. Workman, died in 1969.
Survivors include nieces, Bonnie Biggs of Benbrook, Texas, Barbara Schubert of Cincinnati and Pauline Crabtree of San Francisco; and nephews, Bill Vogt of Cincinnati and Joseph Bremke of Crescent Springs.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Burlington. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
