Emma Thomas, A.D. Owens principal
Emma Ruth Thomas devoted her life to education.
The retired principal of A.D. Owens Elementary School in Newport, Miss Thomas, 87, of Fort Thomas, died Saturday morning in St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
"She ruled with an iron hand, but she was admired for it. The children loved her, and the teachers respected her. She was just the best," said Maurine Kroth, who was Miss Thomas' longtime secretary at A. D. Owens.
"The respect people had for her was legendary," said Dan Sullivan, the present superintendent of Newport Schools.
Miss Thomas, a native of Augusta, worked in education for 42 years, all with the Newport school system, said her friend, Kathy Edinger. She was the first principal at A.D. Owens, and retired in 1972, Miss Edinger said.
A sixth-grade teacher earlier in her career, Miss Thomas became the principal at the York Street Elementary School, and then assumed the position with A.D. Owens Elementary, which was built on the same site, at 11th and York streets in Newport.
Both Mrs. Kroth and her daughter had been students in Miss Thomas' sixth-grade classes.
In addition to being principal, Miss Thomas was also the librarian at both York Street Elementary and A.D. Owens Elementary, and started a library at the former school, Mrs. Kroth said.
"She devoted herself to the school, and at times there were more than 900 students enrolled there," Mrs. Kroth said.
Miss Thomas held a master's degree from the University of Cincinnati, and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an area education sorority, Miss Edinger said.
Miss Thomas was also a charter member of the Northern Kentucky Community Chorus, Miss Edinger said.
Miss Thomas was a member of Northern Kentucky Retired Teachers Association and First Christian Church of Fort Thomas.
