Church teacher Thomas Seitz "lived for his family'
Thomas P. Seitz, a longtime Boy Scout scoutmaster and a Catholic education instructor with St. Anthony's Church in Taylor Mill and Holy Cross Church in Latonia, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington.
The Taylor Mill resident was 48.
The Cincinnati Bell Telephone Co. employee coached many of the teams on which his children played, including baseball and soccer with Latonia sports clubs, Independence Raiders and Northern Kentucky Select Club teams.
"He lived for his family and kids," said his wife, Linda Ludwig Seitz. "Kids were his life, and if he could make one kid's life better, he felt like he had done something worthwhile."
Mr. Seitz grew up in Latonia and graduated from Newport Catholic High School. He was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War, serving in Kansas in the military police.
He studied electrical engineering at the University of Cincinnati and joined Cincinnati Bell in 1976, where he worked primarily as a service technician.
Mr. and Mrs. Seitz married
in 1970. The couple raised their daughter and three sons in Latonia and Taylor Mill, where the family moved in 1987.
Mr. Seitz, a former Boy Scout, became a troop leader before his sons were old enough to join and remained a troop leader for about seven years, taking his young sons along on campouts whenever he could, his wife said.
He taught Catholicism to public school children in the seventh and eighth grades for about four years at St. Anthony's and Holy Cross.
He also was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
"I don't think he had a single enemy. He would give anyone the shirt off his back - and he did once," Mrs. Seitz said.
"He used to work outside for the phone company, and if he found somebody outside who looked cold, he'd give them his clothes or buy them a meal."
Other survivors include a daughter, Erin Seitz of Fort Thomas; sons, Patrick Nicholas Seitz, Andrew Thomas Seitz and Christopher Ryan Seitz, all at home; a sister, Patricia Payne of Cincinnati; and a brother, Jack Seitz of Port Grange, Fla.
