Mattie Malcomb, hard-working farmer, mom
At 97 years old, Mattie F. Stafford Malcomb of Wheatley, was still mowing her own yard.
"She had about an acre, and she had a John Deere riding mower," said one of her sons, Harold K. Malcomb of Wheatley. "She mowed that yard through last year. She had a lot of grit."
Mrs. Malcomb died Saturday at King's Daughters Hospital in Madison, Ind. She was a member of New Liberty Christian Church.
Mrs. Malcomb's husband, Ralph Malcomb, died in 1960.
Mrs. Malcomb grew up on a farm, helping in the dairy and with the tobacco harvest.
"She, along with our dad, believed very strongly in the work ethic. They raised four sons and drilled that into us - everyone needed to pull his own weight to earn his way," Mr. Malcomb said.
Mrs. Malcomb loved indoor work, too - quilting, sewing and cooking, especially.
"When my father was living, she made home made biscuits three times a day," Mr. Malcomb said. "I grew up as a kid thinking light bread was a treat because I was so accustomed to biscuits."
"She pretty much believed in the early to bed, early to rise kind of life. She never liked to put anything off," Harold Malcomb said. "She was very active and ate regular, nutritious meals. She was strong-willed. She never used alcohol and even though we were on a tobacco farm, she never used tobacco products."
