Deli owner Ruth Hoppenjans, loved crafts
Ruth S. Hoppenjans sustained her family and neighbors with food and crafts made with loving care.
Mrs. Hoppenjans co-owned Hoppe's Deli on 16th and Greenup streets for 26 years, where she made many friends while filling their pantries.
"She enjoyed meeting the people, and it kept her active. It gave her exercise to walk to and from the store every day," said a daughter, Diane Hofmann of Cincinnati.
Mrs. Hoppenjans, 95, of Covington, died at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington.
Mrs. Hoppenjans was born in Cincinnati and moved to Covington when she married
Gilbert M. Hoppenjans, who died in 1965.
She ran Hoppe's Deli from 1950 until she retired at age 72.
Her free time was consumed by her passion for copper enameling, which involves melting crushed glass over metal.
Mrs. Hofmann said her mother made art for many years at the Baker-Hunt Foundation on Greenup Street in Covington.
"They still teach it there. She spent most of her free hours doing that," Mrs. Hofmann said.
Mrs. Hoppenjans declined offers to sell her work at an art show, choosing instead to give most of it away to her children, grandchildren and friends.
Some other pieces are still held by the Baker-Hunt Foundation.
"She really liked it. She was glad that people enjoyed her work," Mrs. Hofmann said. "I think she led a full life and she enjoyed herself."
