Newport's "Red' Bartlett, Knothole legend
Thomas A. "Red" Bartlett played Santa Claus, in a suit his wife made him, for hundreds of children during the past 50 years.
But his daughter, Cathy Feinauer, said she and her brothers had Santa Claus for every day of their lives.
"My dad couldn't go anywhere without someone knowing him," said Mrs. Feinauer, of Newport. "He was a real Santa Claus. He was such an outgoing person."
Mr. Bartlett, 80, of Newport, died at 9:15 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospital North, Covington.
Mr. Bartlett, who was the recreation director in Newport in the 1970s and early 1980s, grew up in and around Newport.
He worked with Knothole Baseball for 50 years, and a was a tennis coach at Newport Central Catholic High School.
He was a member of the James W. Costigan American Legion Post No. 11 in Newport, Lawler Hanlon VFW Post No. 5662 in Newport and Youth Incorporated and Boys Club.
Mr. Bartlett, a World War II Navy veteran, spent his life helping children in any way he could, his daughter said.
"He loved children and he made people feel good about themselves," Mrs. Feinauer said.
"He was special. You can't find too many dads like him."
One son, Gregory Bartlett of Edgewood, is now a circuit court judge in Kenton County.
Other survivors include his wife, Mildred Myers Bartlett; another son, Thomas Bartlett of Cold Spring; a sister, Hazel Gramer of Bellevue; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Francis De Sales Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Winston Boyd, 88, of Florence, died at 9:20 a.m. Saturday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of the St. James A. M. E. Church, Covington. Her husband, Charles Boyd, died in 1954.
Survivors include a son-in-law, Cull Embry, with whom she lived; a stepdaughter, Susan Morton of Richmond; and two grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, Richmond. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at St. James A. M. E. Church, and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul A.M.E. Church. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Richmond. Jones & Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
George E. Burgin Jr., 58, of Newport, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include daughters, Karen Engle of Lancaster, Calif., and Angie Epperson of Newport; a son, George E. Burgin III of Havre, Mont.; brothers, Theodore Burgin of Guilford, Ind., and Clifton Burgin of Newport; sisters, Margaret Crichton of De Land, Ill., Dolly Hosier of Sebastopol, Calif., Anne Meier of Forestville, Calif., and Ruby Simpson of New Berlin, Ill.; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at Vitt, Stermer and Anderson Funeral Home, Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Robert M. "Rusty" Burkart, 51, of Fort Mitchell, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a car salesman with Riverside Ford, Newport, and wrote and performed music under the name Rusty Blue.
Survivors include daughters, Carla Brown and Michelle Brown, both of Clinton Township, Mich.; his mother, Joan Burkart of Fort Mitchell; and a half-brother, Stephen Burkart of Edgewood.
Memorial Mass will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Pius X Church, Edgewood. A reception will follow Mass in the church hall. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Home-Health Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Al Damon, 60, of Ryland Heights, died Saturday at his home. He was a surveyor with the Kentucky State Highway Department, a member of Professional Engineers and a woodman of the World Fraternity Society. He also was an Air Force veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Joanne Damon; daughters, Jennifer Lynn Damon of Ryland Heights and Paula Ann Murphy of Erlanger; and a brother, David Damon of Murray.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Cecilia Cemetery, Independence. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Ronald Edward Duke, 47, of Covington, died at 4:40 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington.
Survivors include three half-brothers and two half-sisters. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. today at Askin Cemetery, Brooksville. Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville, is handling arrangements.
Delmar Fugate, 61, of Covington, died Sept. 3 at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a general laborer.
Survivors include brothers, Roy Bottorf of Michigan City, Ind., Roger Bottorf of Knox, Ind., and Hobart Miller of Joliet, Ill.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Parish Kitchen Courtyard, Covington. Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery, Knox, Ind. Braman and Son Funeral Home, Knox, is handling arrangements.
Arthur Glenn "Tuffy" Gordon, 66, of Lexington, formerly of Grant County, died at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday at Markey Cancer Center at University Medical Center in Lexington. He was an employee of H&R Block, Lexington, and was a coach, principal and teacher at Corinth High School. He also taught with the Grant County Adult Education and Literacy Program in Williamstown, and was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Myrtie Popham Gordon; a daughter, Rebecca Quenzer of Atlanta; his mother, Anna Mary Kells Gordon of Williamstown; and a sister, Dorothy Gordon Altman of Williamstown.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry. Vicie Ellen Hoskins, 75, of California, died at 6:25 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of Alexandria Church of God.
Survivors include her husband, Dewey Hoskins Jr.; sons, Ellis Hoskins of Butler, Edward Hoskins of Peach Grove, John Hoskins of Dry Ridge and Joe Hoskins of Ubstadt, Germany; daughters, Joyce Crowder of California and Virginia Faulkner of Dayton; brothers, Thomas Neace of Petersburg, Va., and Garrett Neace of Franklin, Ohio; sisters, Gracie Wilson and Frieda Wallace, both of Colonial Heights, Va., Sally Collins of Williamstown and Canzalia Collins of Lexington; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Christian Robinson, 85, of Florence, died at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

Martha Eliza Hutchison Smith, 95, of Foster, died at 3 p.m. Monday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Fairview Christian Church. Her husband, Charlie W. Smith Sr., died in 1972. Sons, Charlie W. "Billy" Smith Jr. and Norman Smith, and a daughter, Dorothy Smith, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Bedford W. "Buck" Smith of Foster; daughters, Celesta Askin of Falmouth, Capitola Todd and Sylvia Frederick, both of Brooksville; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Augusta. Memorials are suggested to Fairview Christian Church, Foster, Ky. 41043.
Ann C. Sponsolier, 93, of Bellevue, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired food preparer with Medi Club at the Academy of Medicine, Cincinnati, and a former head cashier at the Colonade cafeteria in the Union Central Building in Cincinnati. She also was a member of Dayton Senior Citizens and the Christian Neighbors group at Bellevue Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Corbin of Bellevue; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be in Chilo Hill Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church of Bellevue, 254 Washington St., Bellevue, Ky. 41073.
Mary Rose Thiel, 75, of Park Hills, died Monday at her home. She was a retired registered nurse, a member of St. Agnes Altar Society in Fort Wright, and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph Thiel; sons, James Thiel of Lexington, Thomas Thiel of Center Sandwich, N.H., Paul Thiel of Crescent Springs and John Thiel of Berryville, Va.; daughters, Barbara Thiel of Alexandria and Elizabeth Dardzinski of Kentfield, Calif.; a sister, Margaret Cannon of Jena, La.; and three grandchildren.

Stanley Walling, 55, of Lakeside Park, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Brandon Michael Winters, the son of Michael Winters and Stephanie Ferguson of Burlington, was stillborn Friday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.
Other survivors include a brother, Dakotah Ferguson of Burlington; and grandparents, John and Barbara Ferguson of Independence and Donna Winters of Florence.

Gary L. Wood, 43, of Fort Mitchell, died Sunday at his home of a heart attack. He was a national sales manager with Gold Medal Products Co., Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Roberta Stone Wood; a son, Kyle William Wood of Edgewood; his mother, Mayme Lee Snow Wood of Williamstown; and brothers, Rick W. Wood of Williamstown and Todd F. Wood of Corinth.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Williamstown Christian Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.
