Stanley Walling, "always there' for others
Stanley Walling operated his own tire businesses in Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati for many years.
Although he was a friendly, fair and honest businessman, his wife of 20 years, Janis Walling, recalls him more for his courage and strength of character.
"He was a big man with a kind, gentle heart and a soft voice," Mrs. Walling said.
"He has been ill, but he never complained. He never stopped working."
Mr. Walling, 55, of Lakeside Park, died at 2:25 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
He was the owner of Walling Truck Tire Inc. in Cincinnati, and a member of Summit Hills Country Club in Crestview Hills.
Mr. Walling had suffered from various illnesses recently, including problems with his hips, his wife said.
Still, he managed to cheer their children and friends, she said.
"He had a smile on his face and was always there for everyone else. He was a wonderful husband, a great dad and a friend to many people," Mrs. Walling said.
Mr. Walling was born in Campbell County and graduated from Campbell County High School, where he was a lineman on the football team. He started his businesses and fought his illnesses with the same determination that he used to become an excellent football player, his wife said.
"He was very resilient. He never gave up and lived life to the fullest," Mrs. Walling said.
Other survivors include his daughters, Amanda Walling, at home, and Kimberly Walling of Independence; a son, Troy Walling of Walton; a brother, Ebb Walling of Fresno, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 8:15 p.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Lorraine Brinker, 97, of Fort Wright, died Wednesday at St. Charles Care Center, Fort Wright.
Survivors include a nephew, Walter Heupel of Boone County.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Charles Care Center. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Phyllis C. Day, 56, of Latonia, died at 12:35 p.m. Wednesday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Full Gospel Assembly of God, Newport.
Survivors include sons, Gary Hinkle of Tucson, Ariz., Benny Day of Independence; daughters, Billie Carter of Falmouth and Sheila Day of Latonia; her mother, Cleo Elliott of Cincinnati; a brother, Darwin Elliott of Highland Heights; sisters, Pat Acosta of West Chester, Ohio, and Betty Newton of Aurora, Ind.; and four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Bessie Lee Yeary Ellington, 88, of Cincinnati, formerly of Newport, died Tuesday at Mount Washington Care Center in Cincinnati. She was a retired gift wrapper with McAlpin's department store in Cincinnati and a member of Newport Church of God. Her husband, Lloyd Rex Ellington, died in 1960.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Watson of Cincinnati; a son, James E. Ellington of Louisville; a sister, Mary Cornelius of Maineville, Ohio; stepsisters, Viola Yeary of Maineville and Sarah Williams of Morrow, Ohio; a stepbrother, Earl Yeary of Butlerville, Ohio; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Newport Church of God. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
James Roy Goodman, 95, of Cincinnati, formerly of Erlanger, died at 6 a.m. Wednesday at Twin Towers Methodist Home in Cincinnati. He was a retired electronic engineer with North American-Rockwell. His wife, Anna Lola Goodman, died in 1997.
Survivors include daughters, Margaret Collins of Erlanger and Donna Adrain Falzone of Denver; sons, Robert Goodman of Scottsdale, Ariz., James Goodman Jr. of Independence, Ival Goodman of Xenia, Ohio, and Howard Goodman of Atlanta; sisters, Bertha King of Cincinnati and Nell Fultz of Barboursville; a brother, Cecil Goodman of Johnson City, Tenn.; 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Faith Christian Center, Park Hills. visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
Nestor Guethlein, 83, of Latonia, died at 11:48 a.m. Wednesday at Rosedale Manor in Latonia. He was a salesman with Lodge and Shipley Co., Cincinnati, and a member of the Lyons Club, Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society of St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. today at St. Agnes Church. Visitation will begin there at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Omar Louden, 71, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Christian D. Robinson, 85, of Florence, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was owner of Atlas Welding, Covington, and a member of Covington Masonic Lodge No. 109 F&AM.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Robinson; a daughter, Janice Danbury of Cincinnati; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Elizabeth "Bess" Sampson Robinson, 50, of Great Falls, Va., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Wednesday at her home after an extended illness. She was active in community, educational and non-profit organizations and was an experienced strategic planner, manager and consultant. A graduate of Vanderbilt University with a degree in nursing, Mrs. Robinson held positions at several universities, including the University of Cincinnati.
Mrs. Robinson's civic leadership included work at the Center for Multicultural Human Services in Falls Church and the Counseling Center of Southern Westchester, both in Bronxville, N.Y., and Etude Modernes, the International School of Geneva and the Commonwealth American School in Switzerland.
Survivors include her husband, J. Bernard Robinson; and children, Armstrong Matthews Robinson and Catherine Robinson. Services will be at 5 p.m. today at St. Francis Episcopal Church, Great Falls. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. today until the time of services at the church, and from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Mercer Funeral Home in Bluefield, W.Va. A procession will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home to Monte Vista cemetery in Bluefield for burial. Memorials are suggested to the Pittsburg Foundation, 1 PPG Place, 30th Floor, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15222, for addition to the Armstrong and Elizabeth Matthews Education Fund. Robert H. Timmers, 82, of Lakeside Park, died at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday at Jewish Hospital, Shelbyville.
He was a retired traffic manager with Wilson Freight Co., Cincinnati, a founding member of Tri-State Seniors in Erlanger, and was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mary C. Boemker Timmers; sons, Richard R. Timmers of Florence, Thomas F. Timmers of Erlanger and Joseph H. Timmers of Edgewood; daughters, Mary Jo Behne of Chester, Va., Nancy M. Chandler and Joan M. Van Dyne, both of Independence; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mary Queen of Heaven Church, Erlanger. A reception will follow Mass in the church's lower level. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell.

Ralph B. Schopmeyer, 89, of Highland Heights, died at 6:05 p.m. Tuesday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home in Highland Heights. He was a retired grinder with Cincinnati Milacron.
Survivors include his wife, Naomi Issenmann Schopmeyer; sons, Thomas Schopmeyer of Springfield, Ohio, and Timothy Schopmeyer of Cincinnati; a daughter, Patricia Schopmeyer of Cincinnati; a sister, Rosemary Michael of Hamilton, Ohio; and two grandsons.
No services are planned. Mr. Schopmeyer donated his body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Memorials are suggested in the form of Masses. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.
Frank Setters, 76, of Covington, died Tuesday at his home. He was a retired machine operator with Equitable Bag Co., Florence, and a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. His wife, Ruby Setters, died in 1985.
Survivors include a son, Daniel Smith; a daughter, Julia Pike; a brother, Harvey Setters of Bullhead, Ariz.; and a sister, Iola Rose Baldock of Cincinnati.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.
