Robert J. Barth, devoted to kids
Even after Robert J. Barth's three children were grown, the Dayton man continued to hold the interests of young people close to his heart.
He was a member of the Dayton Board of Education for 17 years and was the former treasurer for the Dayton Boosters, an organization to which he belonged for 20 years.
"It gave him just the greatest satisfaction being able to do things for young people and with them," said his wife, Joyce Vickers Barth. "When people met him, they always thought he was younger, and I think that's because he was always associated with young people and young thoughts."
Mr. Barth, of Dayton, died Saturday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. At his family's request, his age is not being published.
Mr. Barth grew up in Cincinnati. At the age of 25, he moved to Dayton, Ky., where he and his first wife, Dorothy Brookbank Barth, raised three children. Dorothy Barth died in 1982.
Mr. Barth spent three years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then worked for Hudepohl Brewery in Cincinnati for 40 years, where he retired as a bookkeeper.
Mr. Barth was a devoted father and involved with his children. A former Cub Scout leader, he encouraged his children to get involved in clubs and activities. When his children were very young, he would spend time with them every evening - walking, reading or playing outside - giving his wife time for herself.
"Every evening he would give his wife time to be alone, and I guess kind of pull herself together," Joyce Barth said.
Mr. Barth believed in the importance of giving back to the community.
He was a member of the Dayton Health Center Advisory Board and a past president of the Dayton-Bellevue Lions Club. He also was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons Dayton Chapter No. 3076 and was vice president of Happy 55 Club of St. Bernard Church in Dayton. He also was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Bellevue.
Mr. Barth had been retired for 13 years when he married
Joyce Barth, who he met through a senior's group. They married
in 1992.
"He was a very caring and devoted father, a gentle and kind man," she said.
