"Buck' Williams kindly took relatives in

Lawrence "Buck" Williams of Dayton took two young nieces and a nephew under his wing when their mother died.

Mr. Williams and his wife, Alice Williams, made sure the children were not slighted in the entertainment department, said niece Cathy Holbrook of Cold Spring, who was 5 years old when she lost her mother.

"They took us on vacation," said Ms. Holbrook. "We would go to the zoo and Coney Is land and we traveled to Florida and the beach.

"They tried to show us how to travel."

But Ms. Holbrook said "Aunt Alice" and "Uncle Buck" also taught the children more important lessons.

"He taught us that we should be kind to people and generous with what you have - whether you had a lot or not," she said.

"It was how he lived his life. There was just no more caring man in the world."

Mr. Williams died Monday morning at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was 88 years old.

Mr. Williams was born and reared in New port. The youngest of 10 boys and girls, he lived along the riverbank on the former Second Street.

Mr. Williams was a self-employed painter most of his working years, and also pursued a variety of interests.

"He always told us he gave up smoking at 13 so he could run track," said nephew Charley Caldwell of Alexandria, who is Ms. Holbrook's brother.

Mr. Williams met his wife of 56 years when he was playing drums in a band.

He was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan, fisher man and bowler. One of his most thrilling moments was bowling a perfect game in a Newport bowling alley in 1941.

For 25 years, Mr. Williams and his wife were members of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Dayton.

"They were so active," said Ms. Holbrook. "They did all their festivals for the church. They helped sell the candy."

In fact, some of the candy ended up being distributed to neighborhood children, she said.

"All the neighborhood kids got a treat. He was just good for the neighborhood."

Mr. Williams also raised another niece, Victoria Hill of Southgate.

Other survivors include his wife, Alice Caldwell Williams, and many other nieces and nephews.
