Vernon F. Kesel was star athlete

Vernon F. Kesel was a star football and basketball player at Newport High School. Later he took up golf and won championships at Highlands Country Club in Fort Thomas, where he made several holes in one.

"He was a natural-born athlete," said a daughter, Sandra M. Hickman of Southgate. "He was very good at everything he did, from high school on."

Mr. Kesel, 82, of Fort Thomas, died at 6:15 a.m. Friday at the Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home.

Mr. Kesel was a member of the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame and Fort Thomas Retired Men's Club.

He was a retired salesman for Swift & Co., Cincinnati.

"He was a wonderful father," said Ms. Hickman. "Very generous, very loving. He was just a great guy. He knew everybody in the area, and everybody that knew him loved him."

His wife, Alma Kneer Kesel, died in 1993. A son, Randall Kesel, died in 1987.

Other survivors include another daughter, Nancy C. Kemper of Alexandria, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Memorials are suggested to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 10901 Reed Hartman Highway, Blue Ash, Ohio, 45242.

Raymond Denis Beck, 64, of Alexandria, died at 6:45 a.m. Friday at his residence. He was a retired electrician and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local No. 212.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Gemmer Beck; daughters, Deborah Algie of Florence, and Susan Walker, Rebecca Bartlett and Nancy Beck, all of Alexandria; sons, Raymond Beck and Mark Beck, both of Highland Heights, Michael Beck of Louisville and David Beck of Cincinnati; a sister, Ruth Bruns of Cincinnati; brothers, Robert Beck of Highland Heights, Joseph Beck of Harrison, Ohio, Charles "Jerry" Beck of Rolling Meadows, Ind., Donald Beck of Valley Center, Calif., and Thomas Beck of Fort Thomas; 13 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Alexandria. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Alexandria.

Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Athletic Fund, 9 Jefferson St., Alexandria, Ky. 41001; Bishop Brossart High School Athletic Fund, Grove and North Jefferson St., Alexandria, Ky. 41001, or Newport Central Catholic High School Athletic Fund, 13 Carothers Road, Newport, Ky. 41071. Alexandria Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Clara Mae Cook Bowen, 77, of Demossville, died at 5:12 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice, Covington, after a long illness.

She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, Pendleton County, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and was a member of the women's missionary union.

Survivors include her husband, Bernard L. "Billy" Bowen; a son, Joseph Edward Bowen of Demossville; a daughter, June Renee Pettit of Demossville; a brother, Harry "Tom" Cook of Covington; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery, Pendleton County. Memorials are suggested to the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church cemetery fund.

Megan Ashley Faught, 3, daughter of Mark Kevin Faught and Kelly Rene Maines Faught of Fort Meade, Md., and formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Thursday at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.

Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence.

Rosalie M. Gunning, 72, of Ludlow, died at 9:15 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a member of Sts. Boniface and James Church, Ludlow.

Survivors include her husband, John Gunning; a son, Edward Gunning of Lakeside Park; daughters, Donna Steffen of Fort Mitchell, Sharon Wenz of Erlanger and Nancy Underwood of Covington; sisters, Mildred Engelman of Fort Mitchell and Ruth Cramer of Jacksonville, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sts. Boniface and James Church, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Fort Wright, Ky. 41011.

Glendel Wayne Harper Jr., 49, of Edgewood, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was a self-employed electronic technician and an Air Force veteran.

Survivors include sons, Jeffery Harper and Randall Harper, both of Williamstown, and Glendal Aaron Harper and Marshall Wayne Harper, both of Elsmere; daughters, Theresa Daugherty of Vincennes, Ind., Peggy Lynn Hays of Florence, Robin Reeves of Taylor Mill and Jennifer Roberts of Erlanger; stepsons, William Ballinger and Robert Ballinger, both of Elsmere, and Raymond Ballinger of Beech Grove; brothers, David Harper of Edgewood and Jerry Harper of Florence; a sister, Lana Gail Gillespie of Palm Bay, Fla.; and 16 grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Monday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Gary Malapelli, 48, of Covington, died Friday at his residence. He was a truck driver for Tricon Global and a Marine Corps veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Malapelli; sons, Anthony Cody of New York and Russell Malapelli of Dayton; a daughter, Shona Brock of Dayton; stepsons, Luther Duncan and Russell Lee Duncan, both of Covington, and Darrell Duncan of Dry Ridge; stepdaughters, Sheryl Sue Minnelli and Trisha Troxell, both of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Shirley Stamper of Dry Ridge and Kimberly Day of Hanna, Wyo.; a brother, Larry Callahan of Erlanger; sisters, Helen Stephens of Williamstown and Barbra Haun of Woodlawn; 23 grandchildren and two great- grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery.

Hazel Louise Gaines Payne, 60, of Covington, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a cook at Hugh's Oyster House, Florence.

Survivors include her husband, David Payne Jr.; a son, Derwin M. Robinson of Covington; daughters, Delta Payne and Wardale Robinson, both of Covington, and Marthea Payne of Cincinnati; a sister, Rosetta Gaines of Elsmere; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Elsmere. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Mary Smith Memorial Cemetery, Elsmere. Joseph R. Garr Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.

Elizabeth M. Coyle Soete, 91, of Fort Mitchell, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

She was a homemaker and a member of Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington; the Gemma Guild; the St. Xavier High School Mothers' Club; St. Mary Ladies Society; Fort Mitchell Senior Citizens; and the Diocesan Seminary Catholic Women group.

Her husband, John I. Soete, died in 1980.

Survivors include a son, John G. "Jack" Soete of Fort Mitchell; a daughter, Mary E. "Jill" Scott of Reno, Nev.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at the cathedral. Burial will be in St. Joseph New Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, 1140 Madison Ave., Covington, Ky. 41011; or St. Elizabeth Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

James Stull, 43, of Cold Spring, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a member of Newport Elks Lodge No. 273 and a former member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, California.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Murray Stull; daughters, Rachel Marie Stull of Highland Heights and Ashley Murray Stull and Chelsey Murray Stull, both at home; a son, Jamie W. Stull of Peach Grove; his parents, Walker and Irene Stull of Highland Heights; sisters, Brenda Bezold of Grants Lick, Mary A. Seiter of California, Ky., and Debra Hornsby of Cold Spring; and a brother, Gary Stull of Hamilton, Ohio.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery, Mentor.

Carl S. Sydnor, 77, of Lakeside Park, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a retired manager for David Douglas Corp. and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, D. Jean Sydnor of Lakeside Park; and a daughter, Connie Sydnor of Bellevue.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Eloise Roebuck Taylor, 78, of California, died at 7:30 a.m. Friday at her residence. She was a retired teacher for Campbell County Schools and taught at A.J. Jolly School in California for 15 years.

Survivors include her husband, James Richmond Taylor; a son, James R. Taylor III of Georgetown; a daughter, Rebecca Taylor of California; and two grandchildren.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family at California Christian Church. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to California Christian Church, Route 1, Box 6A, California, Ky. 41007.

William H. Tipton, 84, of Fort Mitchell, died Friday at V.A. Nursing Home in Fort Thomas. He was a retired mixologist for Gibson Hotel.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Tipton; sons, William H. Tipton II of Fort Thomas and Richard Tipton of Mentor, Ohio; a daughter, Ruth Ann Roberts of Covington; a sister, Mabel Ruth Garland of Rockford, Tenn.; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family at V.A. Nursing Home Chapel, Fort Thomas. Mr. Tipton donated his body to the University of Cincinnati Medical School. Memorials are suggested to Kidney Foundation of Central Kentucky, 2417-B Regency Road, Lexington, Ky. 40503. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Lawrence "Buck" Williams, 88, of Dayton, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a self-employed painter and a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Dayton.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Caldwell Williams; and a sister, Marcella Harris of Dayton, Ohio.

Services were held Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Burial was in Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Paul United Church of Christ, 524 Fourth Ave., Dayton, Ky. 41074.
