Claire McCarthy Souder, manager of Williamstown's senior center
Claire McCarthy Souder has always been civic minded, so those who knew her were not surprised to see the Williamstown woman, then 69, dishing up food at relief stations for victims of the 1997 flood.
Mrs. Souder was manager of the Williamstown Senior Citizens Center and past president of the Grant County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
"She wanted to help, and she said she hoped people would do the same if (the flood) had happened in their community," said her daughter, Carol Baird of Walton.
Mrs. Souder died Sunday night at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington from complications of surgery. She was 70.
Mrs. Souder was born and reared in Haverhill, Mass.
For 32 years she was a bookkeeper and sales clerk at the Skinner Furniture Store in Williamstown.
"She just liked being around people and helping," Mrs. Baird said. "Most of the time she was just really full of life and energy. She always liked to be going and doing."
In addition to her job at the senior citizens center, Mrs. Souder was working part time as a waitress at the Classic Country Kitchen in Williamstown. She also was a member of the Marigold Festival Coordinating Committee and St. William Church in Williamstown.
Other survivors include her husband, William J. Souder; sons, Gerald W. Souder of Silver Spring, Md., and John Souder of Williamstown; brothers, Edward McCarthy of Largo, Fla., Robert McCarthy of Methuen, Mass., and Raymond McCarthy of Haverhill, Mass.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home in Williamstown. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.

Ella P. Beverly Bruce, 94, of Mason, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Lawrence C. Bruce, died in 1950. A son, Robert Kelly Bruce, died in 1996.
Survivors include a daughter, Ruby Katherin Winn of Florence; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services were Monday at Rogers Funeral Home, Corinth. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Memorials are suggested to Methodist Children's Home, Versailles, Ky. 40383; or Gideons International, P. O. Box 222, Williamstown, Ky. 41097.
Helen A. Fichlie, 88, of Covington, died Monday at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Center, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of the Fort Mitchell and Tri-City Senior Citizens groups, HappyTimers and the Benedictine Guild. Her husband, Joseph H. Fichlie, died in 1983.
Survivors include daughters, Kitty Bare and Patti Lohre, both of Villa Hills; sisters, Winnie Schroeder of Fort Mitchell and A. Augusta Schultz of Covington; eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Mary Lou Freund, 85, of Ludlow, died at 12:30 a.m. today at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport.

Jerome Futscher, 70, of Melbourne, died at 5:30 a.m. today at his residence.

Anna Marie Dickman Hayes, 96, of Covington, died at 5:45 a.m. Monday at Woodland Hills Care Center in Lawrenceburg, Ind. She was a homemaker, a member of Madison Avenue Christian Church and past district deputy with Martha Ross Council No. 2 Daughters of America. Her first husband, Frank Dickman, died in 1955.
Survivors include a daughter, Mae Ellen Kloeker of Covington; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Marie "Bettie" Koch Kohorst, 78, of Fort Thomas, died at 4:20 p.m. Saturday at her home. She was a retired order clerk with Dixie Wholesale Distribution, Covington.
Survivors include her husband, Donald A. Kohorst; daughters, Kathryn Kohorst of Fort Thomas, Mercie M. Kohorst of Lexington and Charlotte A. McDermott of Crescent Springs; a son, David J. Kohorst of Warsaw; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Clyde Lanter, 95, of Williamstown, died at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence, after a brief illness. He was a retired farmer and a member of Dry Ridge Christian Church. His wife, Mary Frances Kells Lanter, died in 1991.
Survivors include a daughter, Pauline Kelso of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; brothers, Carl Lanter of Dry Ridge, Lee B. Lanter of Fort Wright, Ottis Lanter of Williamstown and Dr. Kenneth E. Lanter of Union; sisters, Edna Ruth Chase of Florence, Opal Gruen of Dry Ridge and Emma Gene Biggs of Cincinnati; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Nicholas Edward Maxwell, 13, of Morning View, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a seventh-grader at Twenhofel Junior High School and played soccer in the YMCA league and for St. Cecilia. He was a member of the school band, liked woodworking and auto racing and liked to fish, hunt, swim and play basketball.
Survivors include his parents, Glen Edward Scott of Fiskburg and Andrea Eileen Maxwell Stephens of Morning View; a half-brother, Tyler Scott of Fiskburg; a stepsister, Tara Armstrong of Dry Ridge; grandparents, Genoa Scott of Piner, Jack Maxwell and Anna Maxwell, both of Morning View, Jim and Joann Gullion of Independence, and Elmer and Ruby Randall of Latonia; and a great-grandmother, Edna Webster of Crittenden.

Velva Rosse Nesbitt, 84, of Brooksville, died Monday at her daughter's home in Georgetown.

Earl Clay Rogers, 92, of Fort Thomas, died Monday at his home. He was a steelworker with Interlake Steel and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a sister, Margaret Potts of Winchester; and brothers, Frank G. Rogers of Winchester and Russell Rogers of Titusville, Fla.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Clarmont Cemetery, Winchester. Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.
William Lewis Schneider Sr., 83, of Elsmere, died Saturday at his home. He was a painter.
Survivors include his wife, Diana Rose King Schneider; sons, William Schneider Jr. of Cincinnati, Gary L. Schneider of Goshen, Ohio, and William Edward Schneider of Dayton; daughters, Nancy Woodmancy of Felicity, Ohio, and Amber Marie Schneider of Elsmere; stepsons, Gary Roberts of Elsmere, Carl Murphy and Frank Asberry, both of Dayton; stepdaughters, Tammy Killensworth of Cincinnati, Juanita Broadbeck of Florida and Bernadine Nass of Newport; a sister, Marie Wunderlich of Cincinnati; brothers, Louis Schneider of Southgate and Joseph Schneider of Newport; 20 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

William Andrew Simpson Jr., 72, of Butler, died Sunday at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Cincinnati. He was a self-employed painter, a member of Orion Lodge No 222 F&AM in Falmouth, and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a daughter, Patty Love of Riverside, Calif.; sons, William Andrew Simpson III of Spring Gap, Md., Steve Simpson and Dennis Simpson, both of Cincinnati; a sister, Joyce Patrick of Bellevue, Fla.; a brother, Hume W. Simpson of Yuma, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will begin there at noon Thursday. Burial will be in the family cemetery on Mr. Simpson's farm.
Omer Wilson, 78, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He retired as a machinist at the Post Glover medical products company and was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Eleanor L. Henn Wilson, died in 1987.
Survivors include sons, Gary Wilson and Dennis Wilson, both of Burlington; daughters, Barbara Wilson of Park Hills and Pamela Cooper of Florence; a sister, Elizabeth Eggleston of Hebron; a brother, Lloyd Wilson of Crittenden; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.
