Elizabeth Hucker, business pioneer, volunteer
Elizabeth Neff Hucker, a successful beautician and businesswoman and a devoted volunteer, died at 7:20 p.m. Friday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. She was 87.
Ms. Hucker, who spent most of her life in Covington, was a fiercely independent woman who maintained her own beauty shop in downtown Cincinnati for more than 15 years in the 1930s to the 1950s.
At a time when banks rarely gave loans to single women, Ms. Hucker also was able to purchase the three-family apartment building where she lived by getting local businessmen to co-sign her loans.
As a single woman, Ms. Hucker enjoyed visiting with her nieces and nephews. When she was 39, she married
F. Edward Hucker, a drug sales man, and turned her energies to homemaking and caring for her only child, Victoria Hucker.
Not only did she cook for her husband and daughter, but for the local Sisters of Notre Dame and her two elderly neighbors, as well.
Every Friday afternoon, Ms. Hucker sent trays of pastries, cakes and casseroles to the convent; each Sunday, she prepared dinners for her neighbors.
A member of the Old Faithful Club at St. Augustine Church, she also made cakes for church festivals.
In 1963, Ms. Hucker returned to the beauty business as a manicurist in a Cincinnati beauty shop. In 1974, Mr. Hucker died at home.
As a widow, Ms. Hucker continued to work, but also loved to travel. In her 70s, she visited the Eastern Kentucky mountains, New Eng land, the Canadian and Wyoming Rockies, the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, Greece, Egypt and western Europe.
