Joey Wells, Pendleton commissioner
Pendleton County Commissioner Joey F. Wells was heavily invested in his community - both financially and emotionally.
Mr. Wells, who died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas, was 58.
He was a successful Falmouth businessman who owned a food market, plumbing and heating company, ice business, sporting goods store and mobile home park.
But Mr. Wells' concern for people was evident in the five years he served on the county fiscal court and the 21 years he volunteered as a Falmouth fireman.
"He was really active and anything he did, he gave 110 percent," said a son, Stacey Wells of Falmouth. "He wouldn't quit until it was done.
"He'd been around this community all his life and the things he did were not just for himself, but to help the community out."
In 1965, Mr. Wells he opened the Wells Plumbing and Heating Co. Four years later, he founded Wells Food Market. The family continues to operate the market, now part of a BP Service Station, as well as a sporting goods store and package liquor store.
Mr. Wells started and sold an ice business that eventually became Home City Ice.
The Wells' businesses near the courthouse were hard-hit by the 1997 flood.
"It was a shock to all of us," Stacey Wells said.
"All of our building was under water. We had no structural damage, but we lost all of our merchandise and had to start from scratch. The biggest thing that kept us going was we had tons of people come in and help us."
Joey Wells was a director of the Kincaid Lake State Park Board, Quail Unlimited and R.C.&D. Council.
