Virginia Manning, ran Arc Electric

Virginia H. Manning did more than help establish her family's business, Arc Electric Heating and Air Conditioning in Wilder.

She was an excellent wife, mother and friend for more than 50 years.

"She was the best thing that ever happened to me," said Robert Manning, her husband of 53 1/2 years.

Mrs. Manning, 77, of Fort Thomas, died at 8:27 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. She retired from the family business, Arc Electric.

A native of Cincinnati, Mrs. Manning helped her husband open the company in 1953. She did all of the paperwork, answered the phones and made sure the bills were paid. The Mannings already had six children when the business opened and wouldhave six more before they were done.

Mr. Manning was from Newport and met his future bride more than 50 years ago in Cincinnati at a dance on the Island Queen. He said they had one dance and the future Mrs. Manning knew one day they would be married.

But it wasn't that easy for Mr. Manning. He had been dating Virginia's friend, but couldn't get Virginia out of his mind. After several months, he got Virginia's number from her friend, called and began a relationship that would last more than half a century.

Mr. Manning said his future wife wrote him every day during his 3 1/2-year stint in the Navy during World War II. He said her letters convinced him that their love was real and they married soon after he returned from overseas.

"It was the best thing I ever did," Mr. Manning said. "God took care of me."
