Elmer Wirth, loved family, dancing, VFW
Elmer M. Wirth, a long-time Ludlow resident and father of 10, died at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday at his residence. He was 79.
Mr. Wirth grew up in Cincinnati and went to Western Hills High School. When he was 23, he went into the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific.
He spent about three years in the service and received two bronze stars.
After he returned from the war, Mr. Wirth married
his wife, Florence Niemer Wirth.
"He was very friendly and sociable," said a daughter, Margaret Huff of Hebron. "Everyone knew and liked him.
"He was a master euchre player. He loved swing music, and he was a great dancer."
Mr. Wirth raised his large family in Ludlow, supporting his wife and 10 children as a truck driver for City Haul Trucking Co. in Cincinnati for about 30 years.
He retired when he was 62. His wife died several years later, in 1986.
After retirement, Mr. Wirth moved to Panorama Apartments, a retirement community in Covington.
There he met Betty Bodkin, a dear friend and companion for the last 10 years of his life.
Together, they went to horse races and were active in senior-citizens groups and organizations. He died content and happy at his residence, his daughter said.
"He lived and died the way we all would like to," she said. "He lived a good life and was a nice man, and he died with dignity."
Mr. Wirth was a member of Ludlow World War II Veterans, Bromley World War II Veterans, Kelly Furnish VFW Post No. 7099 in Covington and Ludlow Senior Citizens.
Other survivors include sons, Stevan Wirth of Burlington, Marty Wirth of Florence, Gary Wirth of Latonia, Thomas Wirth of Union, Michael Wirth of Erlanger, and James Wirth and Vincent Wirth, both of Ludlow; daughters, Rita Gorley of Bradenton, Fla., and Mary Clark of Covington; a sister, Deloras Wirth of Cincinnati; 22 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with veterans' memorial services at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Bessie Bartel, 83, of Fort Mitchell, died Saturday at Cedar Village nursing home in Mason, Ohio. She was a retired cashier. Her husband, Jake Bartel, died in 1995. Survivors include a son, Bruce Bartel of Roselle, Ill.; a sister, Mollie Nunlist of Shafter, Calif.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services were held Monday at Golf Manor Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042. Weil Funeral Home, Cincinnati, handled arrangements.
Harold Lee Beckham, 73, of Williamstown, died at 5:40 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Arrangements are pending at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.
Catherine Bieber, 90, of Independence, died at 9:27 p.m. Wednesday at her residence.

Louis L. Drake, 74, of Newport, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired office clerk for L&N Railroad. He was a member of Trinity Church, Newport.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Betty Drake of Fort Thomas; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin at noon Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick. Memorials are suggested to Baptist Convalescent Center, 120 Main St., Newport, Ky. 41071.
Elbert E. Holt, 89, of Richmond, Ind., died Tuesday at Reid Hospital, Richmond. He was retired from AVCO and an Army veteran of World War II. His first wife, Louise Helton Holt, died in 1965; his second wife, Mary Curtis Holt, died in 1981.
Survivors include daughters, Dortha J. Clark of Independence, Joyce A. Osburn of Miami, Okla., and N. Ruth Collette of Richmond, Ind.; sons, Lawrence D. Holt of Kemp, Texas, and Elmer E. Holt of Richmond, Ind.; sisters, Myrtle Taylor of Miami, Okla., Daisy Tune of Commerce, Okla., and Pearl Parks of Richmond, Ind.; brothers, Delbert Holt of Commerce, Okla., Henderson Holt of Richmond, Ind., and Jesse Holt of Welch, Okla.; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Doan and Mills Funeral Home, Richmond, Ind. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Goshen (Ind.) Cemetery. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence, is handling local arrangements.
Edna F. Judd, 89, of Florence, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a retired cafeteria employee for Florence Elementary School. She also was a member of Florence United Methodist Church and its Merry Maker Senior Citizens. She was a member of the Rosebud Chapter Order of Eastern Star. Her husband, Wallace V. Judd, died in 1984.
Survivors include a sister, Geneva Gruelle of Union; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Florence United Methodist Church. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery, Florence. Dale Keith, 51, of Frankfort, formerly of Owenton, died Tuesday at Frankfort Regional Medical Center. He worked for Bendix. Two sons, Tim Keith and Calvin Keith, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Walker Keith; a brother, Steve Keith of Las Vegas; and sisters, Joyce Dews of Cincinnati, Jenny Munson of Columbus and Carolyn Taylor of Frankfort.

Lawrence Maddin, 78, of Walton, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.

Clarence "Chuck" Horace Piercy Jr., 78, of Waco, Texas, died Tuesday at his residence. He was a retired Army colonel.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Piercy; and sons, Chris Piercy and Joe Piercy, both of Texas.

James W. Rardin, 62, of Covington, died at 5:52 a.m. today at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

Randall H. "Randy" Renaker, 41, of Cleves, Ohio, formerly of Covington, died at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday at his residence. He retired due to colon cancer in 1997 after 15 years as a heavy machine operator for Welsh Excavation Co., Cleves, Ohio.
Survivors include his wife, Tina Marie Renaker; a daughter, Stephine Renaker of Erlanger; his mother, Harriet Henges Renaker of Covington; brothers, Paul "Skip" Renaker of Latonia, John "Mike" Renaker of Florence and James Renaker of Covington; and sisters, Mary Renaker and Kimberly Renaker, both of Covington.
Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 7:15 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.
Glenda Riley, 64, of Dayton, died at 10:05 p.m. Wednesday at the Highlands of Fort Thomas.

Clifford A. Rittinger, 78, of Union, died Tuesday at home. He was retired from the Boone County Board of Education.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta Rittinger; a son, Kenneth Rittinger of Union; one grandchild and three great-grandchildren.

John A. Rooney, 69, of Cold Spring, died at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired salesman for the St. Anthony Messenger, Cincinnati, and a Navy veteran. He was a member of St. Joseph Holy Name Society; St. Joseph Senior Citizens; and Kings and Queens Seniors, Alexandria.
Survivors include his wife, Laverne Kremer Rooney; a son, Dan Rooney of Alexandria; a daughter, Mary Jo O'Hara of Alexandria; brothers, Raymond Rooney of Newport and Henry Rooney of Highland Heights; and six grandchildren.

Jefferson "Jeff" Tupman, 81, of Covington, was found dead Tuesday at his residence. He was a retired maintenance worker for the City of Covington Parks Department.
His wife, Cleo Sina LeForce Fuson Tupman, died in 1996. A son, Troy LeForce, also preceded him in death. His twin sister, Mary Jane Tupman, died Sunday at Woodland Country Manor in Somerville, Ohio.
There are no immediate survivors.

Mary Jane Tupman, 81, of Somerville, Ohio, formerly of Covington, died Sunday at Woodland Country Manor nursing home, Somerville, Ohio. She was a homemaker. Her twin brother, Jefferson Tupman, was found dead Tuesday at his residence in Covington.
There are no immediate survivors.
