Executive, nurse Virginia Clare, devoted advocate for seniors

Virginia Margaret Clare, 75, of Independence, was a strong advocate for senior citizens. She attended meetings, served on committees and was the person many seniors turned to when they needed help.

"She didn't have a problem speaking on behalf and for senior citizens," said Carol Marek, coordinator for the human services division at the Northern Kentucky Area Development District. "She was very active, asking questions, and saying what she believed. She was very knowledgeable about the issues - she made sure she was. She very much believed in what she was doing."

Ms. Clare died Tuesday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a retired regional vice president of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Southwest Ohio and a retired nurse. She was a former director of nurses with Booth Hospital and assistant director of nurses at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.

Ms. Clare also served as president of the Jewish Hospital Nurses Alumni Association and co- chaired the PROJECT 100,000 Healthfair, sponsored by the Northern Kentucky Chapter of the American Diabetes Association.

She was a member of the board of directors of Senior Services of Northern Kentucky; chairwoman of the Long Term Care Committee of the Council on Aging of Northern Kentucky Senior Citizens; a board member of the Kentucky Association of Gerontology; a board member of the Northern Kentucky Branch of the American Diabetes Association.

Ms. Clare also was a member of the Legislative Research Commission of Senior Citizens; and a member of several Governors' Task Force Committees regarding health care.

In her spare time, Ms. Clare ran the Kentucky Huckster craft store in Rabbit Hash. She also participated in area community projects, such as being a volunteer for Tall Stacks and the Boone County Bicentennial. She served United Way for many years as a loan executive.

Ms. Clare garnered numerous awards and honors. In 1995, she was named Outstanding Woman of Northern Kentucky and was the 1995 American Diabetes Association Volunteer of the Year. Senior Citizens of Northern Kentucky also honored her for outstanding service to the organization.

"She was very active and very involved and very committed to everything she was doing," Ms. Marek said. "I'm going to miss her."

Survivors include a son, Donald E. Clare Jr. of Union; a daughter, Mary Beth Tillery of McKee; a brother, Thomas Murray Jr. of Wilder; and four grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Theresa Church, Southgate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Prayers will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Northern Kentucky Chapter of the American Diabetes Association; Senior Services of Northern Kentucky, 1032 Madison Ave., Covington, Ky. 41011; or Rabbit Hash Historical Society, c/o Don Clare Jr., 11646 Lower River Road, Union, Ky. 41091.

Harry W. Allen, 73, of Taylor Mill, died at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday at his home. He was a retired chemical operator with Emery Chemical Co., Cincinnati, a member of the Blue Devils 88th Infantry Division organization, and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Turner Allen; daughters, Teresa Schumacher of Erlanger and Linda Beck of Alexandria; a sister, Inice Falin of Richmond; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Ann Bender, 84, of Walton, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a former floor supervisor with Americana Hotel in Miami, the Beverly Hills Hotel in California, and Concord Hotel in New York, and was a former district manager of the New York City Bureau of School Lunches.

Survivors include a son, Larry Block of Walton; a sister, Florence Shapiro of Miami Beach, Fla.; a brother, Jules Bender of Plainview, N.Y.; one grandson and one great-grandson.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Cremation will be Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton, is handling arrangements.

Dolores Mary Brewer, 78, of Taylor Mill, died at 8:13 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Cross Church in Latonia and St. Anthony Fun Club, Taylor Mill.

Survivors include her husband, James Bo Brewer; sons, James H. Brewer of Cincinnati and Stephen J. Brewer of Edgewood; daughters, Susan Ashcraft of Taylor Mill and Pam Keitz of Dry Ridge; sisters, Mary Lou Lutz of Taylor Mill and Dorothy Riemeyer of Edgewood; and six grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Holy Cross Church. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Monday. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mother of God cemetery Chapel, Ft. Wright. Memorials are suggested to Holy Cross Church Air Conditioning Fund, 3612 Church St., Covington, Ky. 41015. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Marguerite Emmy Busch, 98, of Bellevue, died at 10:50 a.m. Tuesday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a retired tailor with Globe Clothing. Her husband, John Busch, died in 1972.

Survivors include a niece, Virginia English of Sun City, Ariz.; and nephews, William Griesinger of Dayton and Elwood Griesinger of Grants Lick.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Dayton. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Carol Green Drye, 82, of Louisville, died Monday at Treyton Oak Towers in Louisville. She was a homemaker and a member of Douglass Boulevard Christian Church in Louisville. Her husband, Dr. James C. Drye, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Anne Ballard of Mishawaka, Ind., Nancy Adams of Philadelphia and Ruth Conant Drye of Narberth, Pa.; a son, James W. Drye of Highland Heights; sisters, Anna G. Green and Ruth C Green, both of Louisville; and eight grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Douglass Boulevard Christian Church. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Pearson Funeral Home, Louisville. Entombment will be at Resthaven Mausoleum, Louisville. Memorials are suggested to Douglass Boulevard Christian Church, 2005 Douglass Blvd., Louisville, Ky. 40205.

Louis Fichtel, 68, of Florence, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired lineman with Cincinnati Gas & Electric Co., and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Fichtel; a son, Tim Fichtel of Amelia, Ohio; five stepchildren; a sister, Carol Varland of Cincinnati; one grandson and five step-grandchildren.

Memorials services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Radel Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.

Della Phelps Fulcher, 86, of Lebanon, Ohio, formerly of Ludlow, died Tuesday at Lebanon Health Care Center. She was a retired store clerk with Ohio Bag and Luggage Co. Her husband, Frank Fulcher, died in 1972.

Survivors include daughters, Irene White and Imogene Center, both of Lebanon, Ohio; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Ft. Wright, Ky. 41011.

James Donald Goldsberry, 70, of Latonia, died at 4 p.m. Wednesday at his home. He was a retired switching equipment technician with Cincinnati Bell Telephone and a member of Calabash Elks and Calabash American Legion in Calabash, N.C. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, a member of the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame, and organized the Rosedale Rebels knothole baseball team. He was an Army and Merchant Marines veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Ida Juanita Lamb Goldsberry; a daughter, Donna Juanita Goodenough of Latonia; sons, James Michael Goldsberry of Independence, Kenneth Wayne Goldsberry and Terry Lee Goldsberry, both of Taylor Mill, and Brian Edward Goldsberry of Burlington; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial services will be at 8 p.m. Friday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 7 p.m. Friday. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Franklin Hamilton, 84, of Covington, died at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. He was a retired machinist with General Electric, Cincinnati, and a World War II veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Daucie Stacy Hamilton; a son, David Franklin Hamilton of Florence; a daughter, Paula Jane Hamilton of Covington; and two grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Gladys Lindeman, 89, of Erlanger, died at 2:05 a.m. today at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Mary P. Miller, 86, of Maysville, died at 2:50 a.m. Wednesday at her home. She was an inspector with Carnation Milk, Maysville. Her husband, John C. Miller, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, John R. Miller of Maysville; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. today. Burial will be in Charleston Bottoms Cemetery, Maysville.

John M. Moran, 70, of Maysville, died at 5:01 a.m. Wednesday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. He was a retired Mason County school bus driver, a retired farmer and a former employee of Mason County Road Department. His wife, Annabell Moran, preceded him in death.

Survivors include sons, John Moran Jr. of Augusta and Michael Moran of Maysville; a daughter, Patricia Miller of Minerva; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Charleston Bottoms Cemetery, Maysville.

James J. Scherder, 45, of Independence, died Wednesday at his residence.

Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.

Carmela Stofle, 73, of Walton, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.

Ronald Karl Storn, 84, of Alexandria, died at 5:20 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. He was the retired owner of Storn's Pharmacy, Newport, and a member of Northern Kentucky Pharmacist Association. He was a member of Newport Elks Lodge No. 273, the Bob White Club, Belles and Beaux, Bluegrass Seniors and American Association of Retired Persons. His wife, Betty S. Storn, died June 7. A daughter, Mary Jane Storn, died in 1958.

Survivors include sons, Ronald P. Storn of Villa Hills, Howard E. Storn and Bradley J. Storn, both of Alexandria; daughters, Julie A. Knight of Fairfield, Ohio, and Susan E. Sinkuler of Atlanta; a brother, Howard "Pete" Storn of Alexandria; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were this morning at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Ft. Thomas. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Paul United Church of Christ, 1 Churchill Dr., Ft. Thomas, Ky. 41075. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Jean Halpin Tewell, 106, of Ft. Wright, died Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center in Ft. Wright. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Covington. Her husband, Russell M. Tewell, died in 1961.

Survivors include a son, Arnold J. Tewell of Redlands, Calif.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Charles Care Center. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Episcopal Church, 326 Madison Ave., Covington, Ky. 41011. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Edward A. Whittlesey II, 74, of Ft. Mitchell, died at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired security officer with Pinkerton Security and Investigation Services, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Donahue Whittlesey; daughters, Linda Burke of Amelia, Ohio, Marie Bensing of Atlanta and Amy Whittlesey of Ft. Mitchell; sons, David A. Whittlesey of Dallas, Michael Berryman of Durham, N.C., Edward A. Whittlesey III of Pensacola, Fla., Noel Whittlesey of Ft. Mitchell and Greg Whittlesey of Burlington; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services were Wednesday. Mr. Whittlesey donated his body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Ft.
