Ft. Thomas' Cameron V. Coffman, athlete, store owner, decorated vet

Cameron V. Coffman Sr. led a full life that took him from the athletic fields of the University of Kentucky to World War II battlefields, and numerous endeavors before and after.

Mr. Coffman, 86, of Ft. Thomas, died Friday morning in the Veterans Administration Nursing Home, Ft. Thomas.

A resident of Ft. Thomas for more than 50 years, Mr. Coffman worked for Northern Kentucky newspapers and was in the sporting goods business in Newport, said his daughter, Sarah Biggs, of Leland, Mich.

A native of West Virginia, Mr. Coffman was a graduate of Greenbrier Military Academy in his home state, and of the University of Kentucky. At UK he was a member of the varsity track team, editor of the university yearbook and active in Delta Tau Delta fraternity, his daughter said.

Her father had a long interest in journalism and harbored desires of being a sports columnist, Mrs. Biggs said. He did work for the Louisville Courier-Journal, the Times-Star in Northern Kentucky, and later for The Post and Times-Star after the papers merged, she said.

"He was in advertising, but he was also a very big sports fan. Later he operated a sporting-goods store on York Street in Newport," Mrs. Biggs said.

During World War II her father was in the 71st Division, the European Theater of Operations, she said. "He was the public relations officer for the division and became a very good friend of John Eisenhower, Gen. Dwight Eisenhower's son. When Gen. Eisenhower was elected president we all thought maybe we could go to the White House for a visit," Mrs. Biggs recalled.

Mr. Coffman attained the rank of major in the Army. He was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in action, and also received the French Croix de Guerre with Palm.

"He was involved with liberating some of the concentration camps. He would talk about the war, but not about that," said Mrs. Biggs.

Mr. Coffman also worked in public relations for the Covington-Cincinnati-Newport Transit Co., known locally as the "Green Line," his daughter said.

Mr. Coffman was a member of the Ft. Thomas United Methodist Church.

Other survivors include a son, Cameron Coffman Jr. of Louisville; daughters, Lucy Matthies and Cathleen Fisher, both of Lake Leelanau, Mich.; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to Highlands High School Athletic Department, 2400 Memorial Parkway, Ft. Thomas, Ky. 41075. Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Marie Rich, 100, helped found Kenton County Homemakers

The lady known as "Aunt Ree" has died.

Marie Binder Rich, 100 years, 6 months and 15 days, of Morning View, died Thursday in St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

"Her mind remained sharp. She was thinking and caring about others until the end," said Mrs. Rich's grandson, Bob Rich.

Mrs. Rich was a homemaker in every sense. Along with caring for her own family, she was a pioneer in the Kenton County Homemakers organization. She was was a member of the group for nearly 70 years.

In 1930, Mrs. Rich recalled on the occasion of her 100th birthday last December, she went to the Kenton County judge to seek funds for the hiring of a county home economist. The judge complied, providing an office and furnishings, for a year's trial period.

It was a good start, and the county has had a home economist ever since.

Mrs. Rich was honored at a 100th birthday party for her long service to the Homemakers. A room in the Kenton County Extension Service Building was named for her and Zelma Beyerly, the county's first home economics agent.

Mrs. Rich was happiest with her family and Homemaker associates and loved to tell stories about earlier times. She recalled seeing her first automobile and how it frightened a calf tied to a washing machine.

Mrs. Rich also remembered the old telephone "party lines," when as many as 10 people were on the line. "If there was anything very exciting going on in the community, everybody knew it," she said.

The Kentucky House of Representatives approved a resolution honoring Mrs. Rich on her 100th birthday and cited her service to the community and the Homemakers.

Mrs. Rich was a member of Goshen Christian Church, as well as a past president of the Kenton County Homemakers. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star in Independence, led groups of senior citizens on bus tours of the United States and Canada, and served as an election poll worker until she was 90.
