Political volunteer John J. Heck, chemical worker, decorated vet
John J. Heck had a positive influence on members of his family, those he worked with in his job and the men he served with in World War II.
Mr. Heck, 77, of Bellevue, died Saturday morning in Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights.
He was a chemical worker for 41 years with the Hilton Davis Co., Cincinnati. "It was the only job he ever had," said his son, John V. Heck.
Mr. Heck retired from Hilton Davis 11 years ago. In connection with his employment, he was the secretary-treasurer of the Chemical Workers Union local for 22 years, his son said.
Mr. Heck served with distinction in World War II as a combat medic in Europe. He earned five Bronze Stars, and saw action in the Normandy Invasion, the Battle of the Bulge and other battles in Germany, John V. Heck said.
"He was always proud that he served his country," said the younger Heck.
While he never sought elective office, Mr. Heck was active in Campbell County politics. "He worked as a volunteer for various candidates," said his son.
"He had an interest in politics. I liked to listen to him talk with his cousin, Maynard Heck, who was a Campbell County commissioner, and I know he influenced me to get into politics," said John V. Heck, of Dayton, a former Bellevue City Council member and a member of the Campbell County Democratic Executive Committee.
In addition to his family and politics, Mr. Heck had an interest in attending the races, John V. Heck said.
