Jack J. McCarthy, talented executive - and musician
Jack Justin McCarthy, past president of Robert A. Cline Inc. and former real estate trust officer with PNC Bank, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was 79.
Mr. McCarthy, who retired 17 years ago, kept in touch with former colleagues.
"He still met with the boys from the bank. They wouldn't let him go," said his wife of 57 years, Miriam McCarthy.
Her husband - who also was a promising musician in his youth - had an even longer association with a group of school chums. "They were longtime friends, from kindergarten days. They called themselves ROMEOS, for Really Old Men Eating Out," she said.
Mr. McCarthy had many friends, including those gained through music, business and membership in Highland Country Club. Though he and his wife belonged to the club since 1950, Mr. McCarthy did not play golf. "Everyone we knew played, but he didn't. He was busy working and raising a family," said Mrs. McCarthy.
He also was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Fort Thomas, and the Fort Thomas Lions Club. He was a past president of Building Owners and Managers Club in Cincinnati.
In his youth, Mr. McCarthy played trumpet with the Shades of Blue Band.
"They played for sorority dances and debutante balls and the like. They even played at the World's Fair in Chicago. He received a scholarship to the University of Kentucky through music, and was active in Sigma Chi Fraternity," Mrs. McCarthy said.
When they married, Mr. McCarthy mostly set aside the trumpet, his wife said, although he still liked to be involved with amateur events such as Lions Club shows.
Mr. McCarthy was also an Army veteran of World War II.
Besides his wife, he leaves sons, Thomas M. McCarthy of Cincinnati and J. Timothy McCarthy of Columbus, Ga.; a daughter, Patty Donaldson of Boca Raton, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky., 41075. Dobbling Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.
Teacher Linda Dils, champion for kids
Linda Dils had two children of her own but loved hundreds more.
Mrs. Dils, a longtime teacher who was recently appointed director of curriculum and instruction for Newport Independent Schools, died Friday. The surburban Cincinnati resident was 47.
"She's my hero," said Dan Sullivan, superintendent of the Newport Independent Schools. "She was so sick, and every day she came to work. She'd lost her hair. She was the most courageous girl."
As preparation for her 24-year teaching career, Mrs. Dils earned a degree from West Virginia University and received post-graduate degrees from the University of Cincinnati, University of South Carolina and Western Maryland College. Mrs. Dils helped revive Newport schools, working to lead the low-ranking system to one Sullivan described as reborn.
"In the last four years, she turned the place around. Through all the adversity that woman suffered through, her main goal was to improve the life of the kids in Newport," Sullivan said.
"Everybody knew that Linda was sick, but they didn't know it from Linda."
Mrs. Dils leaves her husband Allen C. Dils, and sons Chad and Matthew.
