Olivenel Berling, loved animals
Olivenel Berling, better known to her friends as "Pi," had a way with God's creatures.
"She just had an incredible amount of love for everyone and everything," said Ms. Berling's daughter, Laura Crone, of Independence.
"I think she just took the love she had of people and extended that toward the animals."
Ms. Berling, 61, of Independence, died Monday at her home.
When the Campbell County Animal Shelter opened, Ms. Berling jumped at the chance to apply for a job involving animals. She spent the next 12 years carefully tending to the needs of the county's homeless animals.
"She was working as a waitress at the time, and when she heard that they had a position to be filled she told me "I want that job,' " Ms. Crone said. "She grew up on a farm, so she was used to being around animals her whole life. She just loved them."
Ms. Berling's love was even more emphatic for people. At Gathering Place Church in Florence, she spent time teaching Missionettes, which Ms. Crone describes as a "Christian Girl Scouts."
"She helped a lot of families through her work at the church. Every Wednesday, they had family night and she was always there helping out," Ms. Crone said.
