William Davidson, Petersburg principal
William Ace Davidson, a school teacher for 33 years in Kentucky and former principal of Petersburg School in Boone County, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. He was 92.
The Petersburg resident, who also taught in Indiana for 13 years, received honors for his long-time commitment to teaching. He was an educator for 46 years.
"He enjoyed teaching. He enjoyed coaching, too. He did a little bit of coaching with basketball years ago when he taught in the eastern part of the state," said Mr. Davidson's only child, Donald Edward Davidson of Petersburg.
"He enjoyed the competition between the schools. . .and his teams always excelled."
Mr. Davidson grew up in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky, in the Perry County area. He attended Lee's Junior College in Jackson, and Union College in Barbourville, where he received his bachelor's degree.
He attained his master's degree at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.
He met his wife of 64 years, Drucilla Velma Craft Davidson, in college.
Mr. Davidson's first 29 years teaching were spent at elementary schools in Eastern Kentucky. In 1959, he moved his family to Petersburg, where he spent four years as principal at Petersburg School. He then taught for 13 years in Indiana before retiring in 1974.
"He was the type of person that stuck to something. When he thought he was right, he stuck to it," his son said.
Mr. Davidson also enjoyed hunting. He often had as many as four or five trained hunting dogs at a time, his son said: "It didn't bother him a bit to drive to Tennessee to buy a 'coon dog and pay several hundred dollars for it."
Mr. Davidson also was a member of Petersburg Masonic Lodge No. 926.
