Gary Debruler, devoted dad, volunteer
Gary Lee Debruler, a former emergency medical technician and member of the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department, died at 12:41 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was 46.
Mr. Debruler, who had juvenile diabetes, supported his wife and three children as an employee at Bearing Distributors in Cincinnati for more than 25 years.
The Dayton resident became a volunteer with the community fire department, operating the fire engines and working as an EMT, in the 1980s. He remained an active member for about 10 years, said his wife, JoAnn Lovelace Debruler.
"A lot of friends of ours were members, too. It was kind of like a little family when you're members," Mrs. Debruler said.
"He just really liked helping people. . .He'd probably have been active a lot longer than he was if it weren't for his illness."
Mr. Debruler grew up in Dayton and graduated from Dayton High School in 1969. He met his wife in high school and they married
in 1971.
He took a job at Bearing Distributors and did everything from driving trucks to selling and managing the office for the company.
Mr. Debruler enjoyed fishing, camping and sports. When the couple's three sons were young, the family camped nearly every weekend in the summer. He also coached his sons' youth football and baseball teams.
"He was very involved with our kids, as far as their activities," Mrs. Debruler said. "I have a lot of nieces and nephews, and he was really good with them, too. He was a cut-up, trying to make jokes and stuff all the time."
Mr. Debruler was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at age 7. He remained in relatively good health until 1992, when he had kidney failure and had to go on a dialysis machine.
In 1993, he received kidney and pancreas transplants at University Hospital in Cincinnati. For about three years, the transplants seemed to do the trick. But then he began having circulation problems and organ failure.
Other survivors include sons, Gary Brandon Debruler, Jason Debruler and Aaron Debruler, all of Dayton; his parents, Ann and Roy Debruler of Dayton; and brothers, Pat Debruler of Bellevue, Roger Debruler of Grants Lick, Dennis Debruler of Clarksville, Ind., and James Debruler of Dayton.
