Elsmere's Wanda Harrison loved work with Head Start
Wanda M. Harrison, a retired advocate for Northern Kentucky Head Start and Senior Citizens of Northern Kentucky, died Thursday at her home. She was 69.
The Elsmere woman held various other positions through the Community Action Commission of Northern Kentucky's senior work program. She was a receptionist at the Kenton County Juvenile Court, and she worked for the welfare program.
Yet what she liked most was working with the children and parents in the Head Start program, said her daughter, Cheri Carlotta of Elsmere. She constantly volunteered for fund-raisers for the program that prepares preschoolers for kindergarten.
"When you work with little ones like that and their parents a couple of years, you get attached to them," Ms. Carlotta said. "She just really loved her job."
In failing health, Mrs. Harrison retired from Head Start in April after about five years. In May, she was honored by Head Start for her dedication. The Community Action Commission also recognized her for her work. She also was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Lawler Hanlon VFW Post 5662 in Newport.
Mrs. Harrison grew up in Newport and graduated from Newport High School in 1946. She married
her first husband, David Franks of Newport, in 1949. They had five children.
Mrs. Harrison had four more children by her second husband, Lyle Harrison, who died in 1989.
"She was a type of person that never knew a stranger," Ms. Carlotta said. "She always talked to people. She liked people."
