Sister Mary Bathildis, cooked for sisters

Sister Mary Bathildis was a nun who dedicated herself to serving her fellow sisters as well as God.

Sister Mary, the former Elizabeth Hinrichs, entered the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1932 in Germany and spent 63 years in domestic service at seminaries in Mt. Healthy, Ohio; Lemont, Ill.; Washington, D.C.; and the provincial house in Park Hills.

She often dished out healthy doses of advice and wisdom along with her cooking specialties of roast beef and hamburgers, said Sister Shauna Bankemper, who has known Sister Mary for more than 30 years.

"She was a cook in the provincial house and she was the best," Sister Shauna said.

"As we were getting into religious life, we helped in the kitchen as novices. She would take you under her wing, teach you the tricks of the trade and support you. She appeared to be gruff but she was a teddy bear inside. I think everyone in our community has warm thoughts of her."

Sister Mary, 86, of Park Hills, died Wednesday at the Sisters of Notre Dame campus in Park Hills.

Sister Mary had a gift for helping younger and older nuns, Sister Shauna said.

"She had a heart for everybody," Sister Shauna said.

Sister Mary had a dry sense of humor and enjoyed playing cards. She maintained a sense of grace and dignity throughout her life, Sister Shauna said.

"She lived a very full life," Sister Shauna said. "We are happy that she is experiencing an eternal reward right now."
