John E. Wessling, was Post sports editor
John E. Wessling, a former sports editor of The Kentucky Post, was always helping people in need.
"He just had a soft heart," said his wife, Helen McCoy Wessling of Villa Hills. "He was a sweet, loving man who was very gentle and kind."
Mr. Wessling, 68, of Villa Hills, died at 12:35 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a retired writer and photographer with the Cincinnati office of Fairchild Publications, New York. He worked for The Post for 20 years.
Mr. Wessling enjoyed traveling, boating and taking pictures. He loved Germany, Greece and France, his wife said.
"He traveled a lot," she said.
"He went everywhere, practically."
Mr. Wessling also loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Besides his wife, other survivors include his daughters, Kathy Brandner of Hamilton, Ohio, and Fredda Simpson of Venice, Calif.; a son, Robert Clark Simpson of El Paso, Tex as; a sister, Rita Pflueger of Ft. Thomas; a brother, Ralph Wessling of New Port Richey, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Wilder.

Carol Backer, 76, of Highland Heights, died at 2:55 a.m. today at her residence.

Regis Grant Brackin, 67, of Chicago, formerly of Owen County, died Tuesday at Owen County Memorial Hospital, Ow enton.
Arrangements are pending at Brown-Service Funeral Home, Decatur, Ala. McDonald Funeral Home, Owenton, is handling lo cal arrangements.
Thelma C. Derrick, 75, of Claryville, died at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday at Highlands of Ft. Thomas nursing home in Ft. Thomas. She was a retired em ployee of Grote Manufacturing Co., Monroe, Ind. Her husband, B. P. Derrick, preceded her in death.
Survivors include brothers, George M. Schrode and Elmer B. Schrode, both of Alexandria, Frank Schrode of Taylor Mill and Ralph Schrode of Newport.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Church, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. to day at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Ollie Droganes, 74, of Florence, died Tuesday at his home. He was a retired clerk with the Internal Revenue Service, and also worked at his family's business, Sam's Confectionery in Covington. He was a member of St. Paul Church, Florence, and an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Droganes; a daughter, Lois Winebrenner of Independence; a son, Rick Hornsby of Edgewood; a brother, Sam Droganes of Ft. Mitchell; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:10 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Church. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. William J. Frede Jr., 77, of Ft. Thomas, died at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. He was a re tired electrical engineer with Cooper Industries, Florence, and a member of Mother of God Church, Covington.
He was the first president of Bellevue Vets, was a crossing guard for St. Thomas Schools in Ft. Thomas, and a volunteer with handicapped children at the Ft. Thomas YMCA and Parish Kitchen at Mother of God Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Schneider Frede; sons, David Frede of Lockport, Ill., Douglas Frede of Louisville, Thomas Frede of Newport, and Timothy Frede and John Frede, both of Ft. Thomas; daughters, Barbara Frede and Mary Sue Caton, both of Ft. Thomas; a sister, Helen Blackshear of Bellevue; and six grandchildren.

Margaret Mildred Cox Hill man, 94, of Yanceyville, N.C., formerly of Campbell County, died Tuesday at Brian Center Health Care, Yanceyville, N.C.
She was a former postmaster with the U.S. Postal Service, and a bookstore manager and Dean of Women at Atlanta Christian College in East Point, Va. She al so was a member of Oakview Presbyterian Church in Yancey ville. Her husband, Stanley Levi Hillman Sr., died in 1952.
Survivors include sons, Stan ley Levi Hillman Jr. of Ruffin, N.C., and Robert L. Hillman of Purley, N.C.; daughters, Margie Hillman Fessler of Tennille, Ga., and Mattie Lue Dumas of Pem broke Pines, Fla.; 10 grandchild ren, 24 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Oakview Presbyterian Church cemetery Fund, in care of Mrs. Tracy Chandler, P. O. Box 74, Yanceyville, N.C. 27379. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling local arrangements.
Joyce Ann Huffaker Lewis, 54, of Taylorsville, formerly of Independence, died Monday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Plum Creek Baptist Church in Taylorsville.
Survivors include her husband, Leonard Lewis of Taylorsville; her mother, Lydia Huffaker of Independence; a sister, Wilma Moody of Clarksville, Ind.; and brothers, William Huffaker Jr. of Ryland Heights, Samuel Arthur Huffaker of Independence and John Mark Huffaker of Louisville.

Herman Ransdell, 97, of Cincinnati, formerly of Williamstown, died at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday at Lillian Houston Geriatric Center, Fairfield, Ohio. He was a former partner in the Littrell & Ransdell Feed and Hardware Store in Jonesville, and a member of Williamstown Baptist Church. His wife, Elizabeth Davis Ransdell, died in 1974.
Survivors include a sister, Anna Mabel Souder of Louisville.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton.
Mary Laura Rippley, 84, of Dayton, died at 9 a.m. Tuesday at her home. She was a retired sales clerk with Shillito's department store, Cincinnati. Her husband, Clarence Rippley, died in 1990.
Survivors include daughters, Ruth Hollmann and Delores Teeken, both of Cincinnati, and Darlene Blackaby of Dayton; brothers, Joseph Imhoff of Ft. Thomas, Ralph Imhoff of Decatur, Ga., and Charles Imhoff of Tampa, Fla.; sisters, Frances Ailes and Alma Hill, both of Sidney, Ohio, and Ruth Allen of Seymour, Ind.; 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Friday at St. Anthony Church, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas.
Shelby C. Teegarden, 72, of Butler, died Wednesday at his home following an extended illness. He was a retired quality control inspector with General Motors, Cincinnati, and a member of United Auto Workers Union Local No. 674, Cincinnati. He was a member of Central Christian Church in Newport.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Mae Baldridge Teegarden; a son, Robert Lee Teegarden of Utah; a daughter, Joyce Ann Freeman of California, Ky.; a sister, Gladys Pauline Cox of Brooksville; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Butler Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hope, 1 West McDonald Parkway, Maysville, Ky. 41056.
