"Big" Stewart of Newport: big heart matched big size
William J. "Big" Stewart had a generous heart to match his 6-foot-5-inch frame.
"He was intimidating, but he was a pushover," said his wife, Kim Stewart.
"He was a big scruffy guy with a great big heart."
Mr. Stewart, 55, of Newport, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
He was a former carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Cincinnati and a veteran of the Air Force.
As a young man, Mr. Stewart was a bouncer at several Newport nightclubs. Mrs. Stewart said his tough-guy job didn't keep him from helping others.
"He couldn't say no to anybody. I mean anybody," she said.
The Stewarts were married
in 1988 and spent most of their time together.
"We were inseparable from the day we got married," Mrs. Stewart said.
Mr. Stewart graduated from Lloyd High School, where he played football.
His sister, Joy Sullivan of Florence, said that her kid brother was a rascal when she was dating in high school, finding creative ways to pester the boys that came courting her.
Survivors include a son, Jason Stewart of Park Hills; a daughter, Jody Eversole of Covington; stepdaughters, Mary Moore of Latonia, Tiffany Oliver of Newport and Becky Ament of Batavia, Ohio; and his mother, Eila Stewart of Ft. Thomas.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Robert Budde, 77, of Covington, died at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.
He was a retired meatcutter for the Kroger Co., an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of St. Augustine Pathfinders, Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus.
His wife, Viola Budde, died in 1987. Survivors include a sister, Ruth Graue of Ft. Wright.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Augustine Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. today at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright.
Merrell Louis Downey Jr., 26, of Gratz, died Wednesday at Owen County Memorial Hospital, Owenton.
He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Cody Louis Downey of Gratz; his mother, Judy Mae Chadwell Carter of Gratz; his father, Merrell Louis Downey Sr., of Henry County; his stepfather, Seth Carter of Gratz; half-brothers, Lloyd S. Carter of Gratz, Timmy Downey and Mark Downey, both of Defoe, Seth T. Carter of Lockport and Louis Douglas Carter of Fort Stewart, Ga.; and half-sisters, Karen Downey of Defoe and Mrya Raisor of Salisbury, N.C.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at McDonald Funeral Home, Seminary Street, Owenton, with visitation from 5 to 9 p.m. today. Burial will be in Mt. Minish Cemetery, Gratz.
Bennett Drew, 74, of Florence, died Friday at Green Valley Nursing Home, Carrollton.
He was a former sheet-metal worker for A. R. Industry, Cincinnati, and a member of the Full Gospel Christian Center, Bright, Ind.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Owens Drew; a son, James B. Drew of Alexandria; a daughter, Linda Mathis of Battle Creek, Mich.; a sister, Ethel Malicoat of Cincinnati; a brother, Hansford Drew of Hillsboro, Ohio; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one step-grandchild.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, with visitation from 10 a.m. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Raymond Henzerling, 70, of Alexandria, died at 8:40 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas.
He was a retired brew worker for the former Wiedemann Brewery, Newport, and a member of St. Mary Church, Alexandria, and the Knights of Columbus, Alexandria.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Henzerling; a son, Gary Henzerling of Walton; daughters, Debbie Schafer, Sandy White, Lori Robertson and Kim Martin of Alexandria; sisters, Ruth Henzerling and Carol Henzerling of Highland Heights; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial Mass will be 7:30 p.m. Monday at St. Mary Church, Alexandria. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Alexandria. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.
Agnes E. Whaley Kyle, 88, of Lakeside Park, died at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday at Lakewood Hospital, Lakewood, Ohio.
She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Latonia, where she was a member of the women's circle.
Survivors include her husband, Verner B. Kyle Jr.; daughters, Ada Kyle Wiley of Avon Lake, Ohio, and Kathleen Johnson Crain of Lexington; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, with visitation from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Mildred "Millie" Manning, 60, of Walton, died at 12:10 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker.
Her husband, George Manning Sr., died in April. Survivors include sons, George W. Manning Jr. of Florence and Brian K. Manning of Walton; daughters, Victoria Schumacher of Union, and Karren Wilder and Teresa Stalling, both of Covington; a brother, Gilbert Risch of Owenton; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington, with visitation from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright.
Richard Adrian Pabst, 44, of Covington, died at 5:59 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a retired salesman. Survivors include a son, Richard Allen Pabst of Covington; and a brother, Mark Pabst of Bellevue.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Sunday at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington, with visitation from 6 p.m. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Eula Kinman Perkins, 74, of Williamstown, died Friday at Grant Manor Health Care Center, Dry Ridge. Arrangements are pending at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.
Robert Simmon Ranshaw, 59, of Walton, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a board member of Walton United Methodist Church and a volunteer at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.
Survivors include a daughter, Georgia Bailey of Cincinnati; sons, Danny Ranshaw of Cincinnati, Robert Ranshaw of Louisville, Stewart Ranshaw, Mark Ranshaw and Brian Ranshaw, all of Norwood, Ohio, Keith Ranshaw of Independence and Doug Ranshaw of Florence; sisters, Sally Ranshaw, Annie Ranshaw and Mary Ranshaw, all of Cincinnati; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Howard Rivard, 99, formerly of Ft. Mitchell, died Friday at Rose Manor Health Care Center, Lexington. He was a retired butcher for the former Rivard Meats Co., Covington.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Willis "Gene" Robinson, 62, of Bellevue, died at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday at his home.
He was a retired maintenance supervisor with Precision Packaging, a member of Kelly Furnish VFW Post No. 7099 in Covington and an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Martin Robinson; sons, Gary Robinson of Bellevue and Rob Robinson of Wilder; a daughter, Jacquelyn Feldman of Bellevue; his mother, Opal Fields Robinson of Livingston; brothers, Kenneth Robinson of Dayton, Terry Robinson of Bellevue and Edward Robinson of Cincinnati; sisters, Geraldine Russell of Livingston, Joyce Vinson of Ft. Thomas, Shirley McPherson of Knoxville, Tenn., Ann Moahabee of Elsmere and Brenda Watton; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
