Arthur Collier, loved railroad
Arthur Collier crossed paths with many people in his lifetime, as a U.S. Marine, a life-long railroader, a union official and an antique dealer, among other pursuits.
Mr. Collier, 78, of Ludlow, died early Sunday at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Ft. Thomas.
Mr. Collier worked for the Norfolk-Southern Railroad for 43 years.
"He loved the railroad, probably more than he was willing to admit," said his wife, Muriel.
Mr. Collier was a switching conductor in the railroad yards in Cincinnati before his retirement. "He worked long hours, and many hours," said Mrs. Collier.
Her husband was active in the Switchman's Union of North America, and held several offices in his local, including president, Mrs. Collier said.
He was also a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Ludlow, and Col. Clay Lodge 159, F&AM, Covington, and the Covington York Rite.
During his retirement years he spent time working at his wife's business, Muriel's Antiques, in Ludlow. "He met a lot of people, from Europe, South America and from all over," said Mrs. Collier.
During the filming of the movie "Lost in Yonkers" in Ludlow several years ago, the antique shop was made over into a grocery store.
Her husband had a chance to be in the movie but decided it would be more fun to be on the sidelines and watch, she said.
Mr. Collier served in the Marine Corps during World War II and fought in five campaigns in the Pacific, his wife said.
"We traveled a lot and we had a good life," said Mrs. Collier.
