Rev. John Hamby, teacher, volunteer
In his 30 years as a Nazarene minister, Rev. John K. Hamby served full-time at five different churches in Kentucky and West Virginia and was an interim pastor at scores more.
When his doctor told him his health could not support his vigorous life, he took up teaching. He taught in the Campbell County school system, at Campbell County High School, Cline and Reiley middle schools and Cold Spring School for close to 20 years.
"He just enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved people. He was a people person," said his wife, Betty Sue Patton Hamby. "He loved the Lord, first of all, then he loved his family and his country."
Rev. Hamby, 78, of Alexandria, died at 10:20 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East in Ft. Thomas.
He grew up in Alabama, where he and his father, a builder and contractor, worked together rehabbing homes.
In 1947, he married
his wife, whom he met at a Nazarene college in Nashville. He graduated in 1950, and the couple moved to Kentucky, where he pastored at a church in Middlesboro.
He went on to pastor at churches in Cumberland, Winchester and in West Virginia. He spent 11 years at Carthage Church of the Nazarene in California.
While in West Virginia, he also was an official with the Office for Economic Opportunity.
Rev. Hamby retired in 1970 and took up teaching. He was the librarian at Campbell County High School for several years, and he taught English at the middle schools.
Re. Hamby was a past president of the Northern Kentucky Education Association and he taught adult Bible classes for 20 years.
He also was a past president of the Greater Cincinnati Scoliosis Society, which he joined after his youngest daughter was diagnosed with the condition. He initiated screenings in Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati schools to detect scoliosis in children early on.
Mr. Hamby also was a member of the Edward W. Boers American Legion Post No. 153, Bellevue-Dayton, the Marine Corps Association, and was a member of the Fourth Division Marine Raiders. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.
After he retired from teaching in 1990, Rev. Hamby continued teaching Bible classes, working in his garden and raising flowers.
Other survivors include daughters, Johndalyn Dwyer of Cincinnati and Jennifer Curry of Richmond; sisters, Mae Ferrell, Nell Vaughn and Irene Pullen, all of Sheffield, Ala., and Emma Holland of Decatur, Ala.; nine grandchildren and 12 great- grandchildren.
A son, William Lyle Hamby, died in 1996.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Carthage Church of the Nazarene in California. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Alexandria Funeral Home, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Carthage Church of the Nazarene. Burial will be in Mt. Gilead Cemetery, California, Ky. Ada J. Brown, 88, of Covington, died Monday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia. Her husband, Benjamin Brown, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a niece and four nephews.

Shirley Joyce Evans, 59, of Elsmere, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Mary D. Gebhart, 68, of Lakeside Park, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a retired teacher with Sixth District School, Covington, and a member of Hebron Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband, V. L. Gebhart; sons, Thomas H. Gebhart of San Antonio and William E. Gebhart of Lakeside Park; a sister, Margaret Short of Houstonville; a brother, William Dye of McKinney; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at noon Thursday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Edna Duke Graham, 90, of Florence, died Sunday at Florence Park Care Center in Florence. She was a homemaker. Her husband, William Robert Graham, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Robert Lyndon Graham of Atlanta; a daughter, Joy Newsom of Erlanger; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Jordon Alexandra Hall, 29 days, the daughter of Mark and Janet Dotson Hall of Hebron, died Saturday at Children's Hospital, Cincinnati.
Other survivors include grandparents, Bobby and Sissy Dotson of Versailles, Ron Hall of Lexington, and Richard and Sally Thalheimer of Lexington; and great-grandmothers, Elizabeth Dotson of Versailles and Helen Thalheimer of Charleston, W.Va.

Wilma Spaulding House, 73, of Garner, N.C., formerly of Falmouth, died Monday at her home.

Madeline McKeever Jentz, 77, of Erlanger, died at 3:36 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a contributor to the St. Jude Society. Her husband, Henry F. Jentz, died in April.
Survivors include a son, Henry W. Jentz II of China; a daughter, Dr. Irene A. C. Jentz of Crescent Springs; and five grandchildren.

Thomas B. Klare, 67, of Villa Hills, died at 12:58 a.m. Sunday at his home. He was a retired electronic technician with Cincinnati Bell Telephone, and a Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Mable Frances Smith Lilly, 87, of Owenton, died Sunday at Owen County Memorial Hospital, Owenton. She was a homemaker and a member of Cedar Hill Baptist Church, Owen County. Her sons, Orville "Jitter" Lilly Jr., Ray Thomas Lilly and J. T. Lilly, all preceded her in death.

Margaret Sue McAtee, 84, of Brooksville, died Sunday at Robertson County Health Care Center, Mt. Olivet. She was a farmer, a homemaker and a member of Forest Hill Baptist Church, Brooksville. Her husband, Acie McAtee, died in 1965.
Survivors include sisters, Elenora Miley of Berlin and Anna Laura Reed of Foster.

Frances Ramsey Nutter, 63, of Walton, died Monday at her home after an extended illness. She was a cashier with Becker Drug Store, Newport, and a member of Bullittsville Christian Church.
Survivors include a son, Douglas Petry of Walton; a daughter, Cathy Lea Norris of Dry Ridge; a brother, James W. Ramsey of Richmond, Ind.; a sister, Louise Ramsey of Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Marilyn Jane Perkins, 62, of Elsmere, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a nursing assistant with St. Elizabeth Medical Centers. Her husband, Kenneth R. Perkins, died in 1994.
Survivors include daughters, Debra Perkins of Elsmere and Kathy Ligon of LaGrange; sons, Kenneth R. Perkins of Latonia and Guy Steven Perkins of Elsmere; a sister, Margaret Franxman of Florence; a brother, Ray Evans of Covington; and six grandchildren.

Donald Klein Sargeant, 85, of Cincinnati, formerly of Ft. Thomas, died at 7 p.m. June 14 at his home. He was a security guard with Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati.

Rosemary W. Schmidt, 80, of Ft. Thomas, died Sunday at Jewish Hospital, Cincinnati. She was an accountant and bookkeeper and Bellevue Ironworks, and a member of Over 55 Club, St. Thomas Church and Siena Seniors.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Barbara Brookbank of Dayton; a stepson, Charles Woods of Birmingham, Ala.; and a sister, Roberta Stewart of Highland Heights.

Ruth E. Lancaster Skelton, 79, of Ft. Wright, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a secretary with Stewart Ironworks, Covington, and a member of National Secretary Association. Her husband, John C. Skelton, died in 1986.

Ola Chapman Spaulding, 90, of Shepherdsville, formerly of Gallatin County, died Sunday at Southwest Hospital, Louisville. She was a homemaker, a member of Eastern Gate Baptist Church in Shepherdsville, and a former member of Sparta Baptist Church. Her husband, Stanley Spaulding, died in 1980. Sons, Roy Spaulding and Alfred Lee Spaulding, and a daughter, Leanora Mae Perkins, also preceded her in death.

Kenneth E. Stambaugh, 88, of Ft. Thomas, died at 9:30 p.m. Sunday at Middletown Regional Hospital in Middletown, Ohio. He was a retired plant metallurgist with Newport Steel, and a former member of Ft. Thomas Masonic Lodge No. 808 and Scottish Rite. His wife, Lillian Stambaugh, and a son, Donald Stambaugh, both preceded him in death.
Survivors include grandchildren, Shelly Morris and Doug Stambaugh, both of Hamilton, Ohio; and one great-grandson.

Louella Mae Fields Wagoner, 98, of Brooksville, died Sunday at Edgemont Nursing Home, Cynthiana. She was a homemaker and a deacon with Cynthiana Seventh Day Adventist Church. Her husband, Edgar Wagoner, died in 1963.
Survivors include sons, Harold Wagoner of Brooksville, Omer Wagoner of Americus, Ga., and Donald Wagoner of Floral City, Fla.; a daughter, Juanita Wagoner Martin of Brooksville; brothers, Paul Fields of Louisville and Chester Fields of Falmouth; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
