Frances "Toots' Burkhardt, served St. Therese Church from founding
Frances "Toots" Burkhardt was a founding member of St. Therese Church in Southgate, where she was the first sacristan and a past president of the altar society.
Mrs. Burkhardt was a regular churchgoer who also helped out every way from washing vestments to calling bingo to driving nuns to appointments.
"It didn't make any difference what the project was, my mother was involved," said Mrs. Burkhardt's daughter, Jean Steffen of Cold Spring.
Mrs. Burkhardt, of Southgate, died Saturday night at St. Luke Hospital East in Ft. Thomas. She was 92 years old. Her husband, Henry Burkhardt, died in 1976.
Mrs. Burkhardt was born and reared in Newport. In 1925, when she and her husband were newlyweds, they built a house in Southgate. Mrs. Burkhardt was a homemaker.
The couple were members of St. Thomas Church in Ft. Thomas until 1927, when the parish split because it had grown too large.
Some 20 families - including the Burkhardts - established St. Therese Church in Southgate.
As church sacristan, Mrs. Burkhardt made certain the altar and sanctuary were clean and stocked with provisions for Communion and other sacraments. She headed the altar society, a group of women who sponsored a variety of projects.
"She helped out at all the festivals, with all the cooking," said Mrs. Steffen. "St. Therese still to this day has a bingo, and my mother was one of the people who worked every week on the bingo."
When St. Therese expanded, Mrs. Burkhardt helped sew new curtains for the church.
Mrs. Burkhardt enjoyed getting behind the wheel of a car and did so for 65 years - often chauffeuring nuns and sometimes a priest.
"She was a very dedicated person," said Mrs. Steffen. "She was a person who attended all religious services during the week," including Sunday afternoon services and weekday novenas.
Mrs. Burkhardt also is survived by a second daughter, Karen Burkhardt of Cincinnati, and two grandchildren.
Mrs. Burkhardt was buried Tuesday in St. Stephen cemetery in Ft. Thomas. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home in Ft. Thomas handled the arrangements.
