Edward Rogg, seaman in 7 wars
Edward "Eddie" Rogg, a retired merchant seaman who was decorated by the Russian government recently for his part in running supplies through the Arctic Circle during World War II, died at 6:30 a.m. Friday at his home in Dayton. He was 76.
Mr. Rogg spent most of his life at sea. As a teen he got a job as a deckhand on a yacht in Lake Michigan. The day after the United States entered World War II, Mr. Rogg tried to enlist in the Army, the Navy and the Marines.
"He had a spot on his lungs, and they wouldn't take him," said his brother, Francis, "Boop" Rogg.
So Eddie Rogg went to the Coast Guard and became a merchant marine.
He was among the heroic crews supplying munitions from the United States to northern Russian ports above the Arctic Circle. He carried supplies during the D-Day invasion, his brother said. "He was transporting supplies during the Korean War and Vietnam," his brother said.
In an interview in 1992, Mr. Rogg talked about his supply runs to the Arctic Circle:
"On one run, 10 of the 30 ships were sunk. Another time a ship next to us was hit by torpedoes and blew up."
Mr. Rogg received two medals from the Russian government honoring American veterans who participated in the Allied convoys carrying supplies to the ports of Murmansk and Archangel.
Mr. Rogg had a 35-year career with the U.S. Coast Guard. His travels took him to 84 countries and put him in the middle of seven wars, including conflicts in China, Korea and the Middle East.
He retired in 1977 at age 55 and came home to Dayton, where he became active in St. Bernard Church. He and his brother were members of the OK Horseshoe Club in Cincinnati. He was a member of the American Legion and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
"When you talked to him you never got tired," his brother said. "He always had another good story to tell. When we went somewhere, everybody wanted to be next to him."
He kept in contact with friends around the globe, sending stacks of birthday and Christmas cards.
"If you did him a five-cent favor, he had to do you a $3 favor," his brother said.
Several months ago he learned he had cancer.
