Alexandria's Gene F. Petrie, made mark in sales, Masons
Gene Fred Petrie worked right up to the last day of his life.
Mr. Petrie, 84, of Alexandria, died Sunday at his residence.
On Saturday he had worked as a doorman at the Cooper Funeral Home in Grants Lick, a part-time post he had handled for the past 15 years. "He worked two funerals Saturday and when he came home he said he was tired. When I tried to wake him for church this morning, he was gone," Mr. Petrie's daughter, Jenny Walsh, said Sunday.
A member of a pioneering Campbell County family, Mr. Petrie worked as an automobile salesman for much of his life. He worked for Riverside Ford from the late 1960s until the early 1980s, and before that was with Escue Pontiac and several other dealers, Mrs. Walsh said.
"He just knew so many people. We'd travel to Florida and he knew people along the way," said Mr. Petrie's daughter.
After retirement from Riverside Ford, Mr. Petrie worked as a security guard at the Disabled American Veterans headquarters in Cold Spring, and for much of that time also worked at the funeral home, Mrs. Walsh said.
Mr. Petrie was very active in Masonic organizations over the years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 152, Alexandria, where he was a past master and district deputy grand master, and was also a former past master of the Aspen Grove Lodge in Grants Lick, his daughter said.
Mr. Petrie also belonged to the Alexandria Order of Eastern Star 337, where he was a past worthy patron; the Shriners and the Scottish Rite. He traveled to many Grand Lodge meetings, Mrs. Walsh said, and was director of the youth organization of Job's Daughters.
"He took great pride in the youth," said Mrs. Walsh.
Mr. Petrie liked to fish and play golf, his daughter said, and he was also a member of the Oddfellows and Disabled American Veterans. He was an elder at Alexandria Church of Christ.
His wife, Dot Petrie, preceded him in death.
Mr. Petrie leaves another daughter, Edith Gastright of Stuart, Fla.; sons, Russell Petrie of Crystal River, Fla., and Eugene Petrie of Westport, Ind.; a brother, Kenneth Petrie of Port Orange, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Alexandria Church of Christ. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Burial will be in Peach Grove Cemetery.
Raymond John Arnzen, 79, of Newport, died at 3:30 a.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. He was a retired bottler after 40 years with the Geo. Wiedemann Brewing Co., Newport.
He was a member of Brewery Workers Union Local 199, and was a semi-professional baseball pitcher in the Buckeye Baseball League. He was also a World War II Army Veteran.
Survivors include a sister, Louise McMahon of Newport; and several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Corpus Christi Church in Newport. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Wilder. Memorials may be send to the charity of donor's choice.
Wardie M. Bell, 90, of Monroe, Mich., formerly of Falmouth, died Saturday at her residence. She was a retired secretary. Her husband, Halbert Bell, and four children, Jack Bell, Halbert Bell Jr., Allen Bell and Joyce Bell, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include sisters, Florence Daugherty of Lexington and Katherine Holland of Florence; a grandchild, four great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.
Nettie Burris, 92, of Butler, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas.
Arrangements are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler.
Gary Lee Bush, 54, of Alexandria, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a former parts manager for Howard Adams Toyota, part owner of In Town Cafe, Covington, and an Army veteran. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and National Sheriff's Association.
Survivors include his mother, Elizabeth Nichols Bush of Alexandria; brothers, Charles Bush of Erlanger and Raymond E. Bush of Walton; and sisters, Elizabeth Matteoli and Pat Anderson, both of Independence.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery. Rosa Case Cummins, 79, of Brooksville, died Saturday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. She was a homemaker and a member of Willow Baptist Church, Bracken County. Her husband, Chester Cummins, died in 1996.
Survivors include sons, Steve Cummins of Lexington, Barry Cummins of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Joel Cummins of West Chester, Ohio; a brother, Stanley Case of Lakeland, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Brooksville Cemetery. Edith M. Elliot, 86, of Covington, died Saturday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. She was a retired teacher for the Portland, Ore., public schools and was a writer of novels and children's books. She was a member of Sequim United Methodist Church, Sequim, Wash., and Ladies Auxiliary of Elks Lodge 2642, Sequim. Her husband, Wilmer Elliot, died in 1983.
Survivors include sons, Ernest Elliot of Villa Hills, Wesley Elliot of Moberly, Mo., and Wil Elliot of Salt Lake City; a daughter, Mary Elliot of Kissimmee, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.

Jay R. "Jay Bird" Gieske, Sr., 31, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died in an automobile accident Thursday on West McMicken Avenue in Cincinnati. He was a lot attendant for Allright Parking Co., Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Sadie Bobbie Morrow; a son, Jay Gieske Jr. of Newport; a daughter, Amanda Bradford of Covington; his father, Fred J. Gieske of St. Paul, Minn.; his mother and stepfather, Norma J. and James Hurt of Williamstown; his adopted father, Charles A. Danny Ray Haney, 46, of Cynthiana, died Friday at University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington. He was self-employed and a member of Cynthiana Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Teresa Cunningham Haney; sons, Aaron Joseph Haney and Adam Jarrod Haney, both of Cynthiana; sisters, Joann Wolfe, Ruth Ann Wolfe and Patricia Carper, all of Carter County, Janet Bloomfield of Lewis County, Shirley Rohr of Ashland and Teresa Lewis of Abbeville, S.C.; and brothers, Bill Haney, Jim Haney and Bob Haney, all of Carter County.

Donald M. Hatton Sr., 43, of Covington, died at 4:30 a.m. Friday at his residence. He worked as a roofer and was an Army veteran.

Otto A. Neff, 72, of Hebron, died at 8:56 a.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired purchasing agent for the Queen City Club, Cincinnati. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge, Norwood, Ohio.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Loze Neff; a daughter, Caroline Shirley of Independence; sons, Ott J. Neff of Richmond, Ind., Anthony Neff of Covington and David Neff of Hebron; sisters, Sister Carolyn Louise Neff of Ft. Steven R. Schwierjohann,, 38, of Erlanger, died Friday at his residence. He was a marketing agent for HealthSouth Inc., Edgewood. He was a member of the Cincinnati Recreation Commission Board for the Special Olympics and the founder and director of Northern Kentucky Wheelchair Sports, Erlanger.
Survivors include his wife, Patty Flanagan Schwierjohann of Bellevue; stepdaughters, Elizabeth Ann Peeno of Bellevue and Lydia Mary Peeno of Highland Heights; his mother, Jane Paolucci Schwierjohann of Highland Heights; his father, Raymond Schwierjohann of Richmond; a sister, Debbie Schwierjohann of Highland Heights; and brothers, David Schwierjohann of Southgate and Jeff Schwierjohann of Richmond.

Estill Thomas, 81, of Caddo, died Saturday at Grant Manor Nursing Home, Williamstown. He was a retired farmer. He was a member of Pine Grove Church, Pendleton County, where he was a trustee, and a member of Masonic Lodge 274, Foster.

Hazel Throckmorton, 90, of Sardis, died at 12:45 p.m. Friday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. She was a retired cook for the Thoroubred Grill, Mays Lick, and a member of the Methodist faith. Her husband, Elsworth Throckmorton, died in 1986.
Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn Dugan of Washington, Ky.; sons, Gordon Throckmorton of Maysville and Kenneth Throckmorton of Mays Lick; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
