Sister Mary Marina, teacher, historian
Sister Mary Marina spent her entire life learning and teaching others.
She was a school teacher for 53 years with the Diocese of Covington and the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. After she retired, Sister Marina, always a history buff, worked for 15 years in the archives of the Sisters of Notre Dame Provincial House in Park Hills.
"Her love for history and love for our community were things I always loved about her," said Sister Shauna Bankemper of the Sisters of Notre Dame.
"She was a person who could always get into details. She loved knowing the little details that are part of history."
Sister Marina, 90, died Monday at St. Joseph Heights in Park Hills, where she had lived since 1982.
She was born Mary Margaret Hackman and made her vows 67 years ago. She was trained to be a teacher at Villa Madonna in Covington.
She taught elementary and junior high school students at 14 different schools in Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati. Most of her teaching years were spent at Sacred Heart in Bellevue and Our Lady of Loretto in Linwood, but she also taught at St. Joseph School in Cold Spring, St. Augustine School and St. John's in Covington and other Northern Kentucky schools. She also was a principal at several of the schools.
Sister Marina taught Sister Bankemper in the eighth grade at St. Agnes School in Park Hills.
"She was a very prayerful woman who loved her community, was very interested in the people - especially the students she taught and the people who were part of her life - and she was very supportive of them throughout life," Sister Bankemper said.
