Thelma Gregory loved church, baking for Lloyd High students
Thelma Gregory of Elsmere was a quiet, often reserved person.
But that didn't stop her from reaching out when her family or church was involved.
"She was a very quiet person, and she stayed in a lot," said her daughter, Wanda Lovelace of Union.
"But if it involved her family or the church, she was on top of it. She always attended every church function that arose."
Mrs. Gregory, 71, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. Her husband, John, died in 1995. She was a member of the Elsmere Baptist Church.
Mrs. Gregory was employed as a baker at the Lloyd High School cafeteria, a position she held for more than 20 years. Formerly a housewife, she took the position after her husband retired.
"She loved to talk about the new fashions the kids were wearing," Ms. Lovelace said. "She always brought home stories about what was going on with the children in the lunchroom. She loved talking with them."
Mrs. Gregory also knew how to stretch a buck, especially to provide for her children.
"She was the most thrifty person I ever saw. She could make a dollar last forever," Ms. Lovelace said.
"When we were young, we didn't have much, but she always did without to make sure we had what we needed."
Her services to the church included cooking dinner for families of the ill and participating in fund-raisers.
