Rev. James Cooley, raised family and spread gospel
For 16 years, Rev. James. A. Cooley preached the gospel inside a little church he built in his own yard.
The preacher played the guitar, sang and praised the Lord to a weekly congregation of 25 to 30 people. On Christmas, as many as 185 peo ple would crowd inside his church for prayer, free toys and food.
"God called Daddy to preach, and so Daddy was a preacher," said a daughter, Sheila Bryant, of Maysville. "He didn't go through no school or church.
"Wherever he'd go, he'd tell people about God."
Rev. Cooley, of Maysville, died at 12:35 a.m. Wednesday at his home. The 62-year-old preacher suffered from cancer.
He grew up in Garrison, Ky., and learned to play guitar and sing at a young age.
"He was a country boy, and music was their life. Every country boy had a guitar," his daughter said.
Before becoming a preacher, the Army veteran was a self-employed carpenter. He married
his wife of 41 years, Irene Cooley, in 1956, and the couple had eight children.
He was a member of Ripley Assembly of God in Maysville.
In 1972, he quit his construction job after injuring his back. Soon after, he began preaching, his wife said, and from then on he devoted him self to spreading the Lord's word.
He preached at churches in Vanceburg, and he went to hospitals and homes, preaching, singing and giving away Bibles.
"He'd go from house to house back in these hollers where these little kids was, and to hospitals," Mrs. Cooley said. "He'd just go all over the place."
In 1982, he built his church and held weekly services there. He also collected toys for needy children.
"We had it jammed once with 185 people, and that was his giveaway night for Christmas," his wife said.
