Sandra Lynn Jones, program director of Ky. Department of Veterans Affairs

Sandra Lynn Jones volunteered her time to help veterans and their families, and it grew into a full-time position with the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Mrs. Jones, 45, of Dry Ridge, died Friday in University of Louisville Hospital.

She was state program director for the Kentucky Department of Veteran Affairs in Louisville.

"She had been in her current post about a year, and before that was a regional coordinator," said James Halvotgis, deputy director of the department.

Mrs. Jones supervised field operations and helped train volunteer veterans workers, he said.

"She started herself as a volunteer. She knew her field extremely well and assisted many veterans and their family members," Halvotgis said. "She was a very valuable employee, and will be sorely missed."

Mrs. Jones was a member of Hills of Kentucky Cloggers in Florence.

"She had been dancing for quite a while, and there have been several articles in the papers about her and the group," said Suzanne Jones, Mrs. Jones's daughter-in-law.

Mrs. Jones was also a member of the Foster Care Review Board in Grant County.

Survivors include her husband, Jimmy Jones; a son, Greg Jones of Dry Ridge; her mother, Juanita Leonard of La Follette, Tenn.; a sister, Mary Jo Leonard of Pineville; a brother, Arthur Pat Leonard of Caryville, Tenn.; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Robert Knuehl, founded Camp Springs fire department

Robert Charles Knuehl served his country and his community as a Marine during World War II, a rural letter carrier and a founder of the Camp Springs Volunteer Fire Department.

"He was very dedicated to the postal service and to his country," said Myron Born, the Camp Springs Fire Chief.

Mr. Knuehl, 73, of Melbourne, died Friday afternoon in St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

Mr. Knuehl was a retired rural letter carrier in the Melbourne and Camp Springs area and drove many miles over country roads to deliver the mail.

"He never missed a day. I saw him put chains on all four wheels of his vehicle to get through the snow," said Born, who succeeded Mr. Knuehl on the rural route.

Mr. Knuehl was a member of the National and Kentucky Rural Letter Carriers associations and was selected as an outstanding letter carrier in 1979.

Mr. Knuehl also was a founder and charter member of the Camp Springs Fire Department. "It was in 1949, when he and a couple of other guys got together and formed the department," Born said.

Mr. Knuehl was also a former member of Camp Springs Fire District No. 3, which oversees the department and collects taxes for its operation. He received a 30-year service award from the department and the Carl Futscher Award for his service to the department.

On election days, Mr. Knuehl worked at the polling place in Camp Springs. He was also a past commander, quartermaster and a drill team member of Campbell County VFW Post No. 3205, Alexandria. He was a member of Simon Gosney American Legion Post No. 219, Disabled American Veterans in Cold Spring and the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Survivors include his wife, Anita Knuehl; sons, John T. "Tom" Knuehl of California and Robert T. Knuehl of Melbourne; a daughter, Marietta Knuehl of Melbourne; and a sister, Agnes Schultz of Melbourne.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Church, Camp Springs. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Alexandria Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery, Mentor.

Gertrude F. Marshall Bohlinger, 83, of Ft. Mitchell, died at 11:47 p.m. Saturday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Bros. Funeral Home, Latonia.

Marie Brell, 85, of Williamstown, died at 6:36 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County in Williamstown after a brief illness. She was a retired secretary with Pacific Telephone Co., Huntington Park, Calif.; a member of Williamstown Christian Church; and a former member of Williamstown Homemakers. Her husband, Walter Joseph Brell, died in 1968.

Survivors include brothers, Robert Latimer and E. C. Latimer, both of Williamstown; and a sister, Emogene McClanahan of Williamstown.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at noon Tuesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Williamstown Christian Church Building Fund, 318 N. Main St., Williamstown, Ky. 41097.

Ricky Joe Chester, 40, of Newport, died at 9:50 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. He was a waiter.

Survivors include sisters, Nancy Naberhaus, Peggy Riley and Wanda Mumphrey, all of Newport, Diana Batton of Melbourne and Janet Alford of Cincinnati; and brothers, Billy Chester, Paul Chester and Jack Chester, all of Cincinnati, Gene Chester and Gary Chester, both of Newport, and Ernest Chester of Dayton.

Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Evergreen Chapel, Southgate.

Faith E. Thomas Crawford, 90, of Highland Heights, died Friday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights. She was a homemaker and a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, Cincinnati. Her husband, Henry Crawford, died in 1964.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Cremation will be at Baxter's Crematory, Cincinnati. Cremation Society of Greater Cincinnati is handling arrangements.

Edna L. Daniel, 71, of Newport, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a gift wrapper for Lazarus Department Store, Cincinnati, and was a member of St. Stephen Church, Newport.

Survivors include her husband, Norman Daniel; a son, David Daniel of Cincinnati; daughters, Linda Bryant of Newport and Sandra Munninghoff of Alexandria; a brother, Luke Kidney of Cold Spring; a sister, Violet Hehman of Ft. Thomas; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Stephen Church, Newport. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 745 W. Main St., Louisville, Ky. 40202. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.

Russell V. Ferguson, 78, of Rushville, Ind., died at 5:40 p.m. Saturday in Rushville. He was a barber and a member of St. Mary Church, Rushville.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Ferguson; sons, Russell L. Ferguson of Ft. Wright and Ronald Ferguson of Muncie, Ind.; daughters, Carolyn Poole of Florence, Marilyn Polley of Elsmere and Shelby Jean Collier of Indianapolis; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be private. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042; or St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105. George P. Todd Funeral Home, Rushville, Ind., is handling arrangements.

Elmer M. Gehring, 79, of Alexandria, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. He was a retired employee of Interlake Steel, Newport, and a farmer. His wife, Dorothy Rogers Gehring, died in 1992. A brother, Sheldon Gehring, died in 1997.

Survivors include a daughter, Terrie Rath of Alexandria; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Alexandria United Methodist Church, 316 W. Main St., Alexandria, Ky. 41001.

Margaret Ann Hall, of Crescent Springs, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Alice Hoetker, 77, of Newport, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a retired machine operator with Zumbiel Box Co., Cincinnati.

Survivors include a son, Robert Leroy Hoetker of Newport; a daughter, Edith Kroth Waddell of Loveland, Ohio; a sister, Dinie Christian of Newport; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Flora "Betty" Jurgens, 81, of Covington, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Disabled American Veterans. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Independence Cemetery.

Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Jean Clark Leisl, 96, of Ft. Thomas, died at 7:58 p.m. Friday at Highlands of Ft. Thomas nursing home. She was a retired federal traffic supervisor in Cincinnati. Her husband, Sylvester G. Leisl, died in 1985.

Survivors include a son, Donald Leisl of Ft. Thomas; a daughter, Marjorie L. Schroeder of Milford, Ohio; a brother, Rob ert Panders of Cincinnati; six grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Thomas Church, Ft. Thomas. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Joe Lloyd Jr., 63, of Covington, died at 6:50 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired head custodian with Kenton County Schools and a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church, Covington.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie King Lloyd; a son, Mark Lloyd of White Oak, Ohio; a daughter, Sandra Gullett of Independence; his mother, Maudie Lloyd of Warsaw; brothers, Wayne Lloyd of Arkansas and Jack Lloyd of Burlington; sisters, Evelyn Bussard of Cincinnati and Sue Varney of Covington; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Palmer Lee Piper, 73, of Independence, died at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired stationary engineer with General Electric, a member of Wilmington Masonic Lodge, and a veteran of the Merchant Marines.

Survivors include his wife, Mable L. Benson Piper; sons, Ronald L. Piper and Jeffrey A. Piper, both of Independence, and Timothy C. Piper of Cincinnati; a daughter, Rebecca A. Piper of Independence; a brother, John Piper of Owenton; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Kidney Foundation, 2330 Victory Parkway East, Cincinnati, Ohio 45206.

Amelia B. Rauf, 89, of Erlanger, died at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Coving ton. She was a bookkeeper with the trust department of Star Bank and a member of the St. Henry Church Legion of Mary Auxiliary, the church Altar Society and Seniors club. She was a volunteer at St. Charles Care Center, Ft. Wright, and a third order Franciscan.

Her husband, George C. Rauf, died in 1984.

Survivors include sons, Chris Rauf of Independence and David Rauf of Ft. Mitchell; a daughter, Barbara Rauf of Peebles, Ohio; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 5 to 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas.

Memorials are suggested to Passionist Nuns, 1151 Donaldson Highway, Erlanger, Ky. 41018.

Archie D. Searp, 71, of Bromley, died at 9:50 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.
