Thomas Oates, Bellevue fire captain, active in vets' group
Firefighting runs in Thomas Sheridan Oates' family.
His father and brother were firefighters in Cincinnati, and Mr. Oates was a retired captain with the Bellevue Fire Department.
"That was probably his all-time high," said a daughter, Shirley Janson of Bellevue. "He grew up with it. That's probably why he held a special place for it in his heart."

The Cincinnati man, formerly of Bellevue, had cancer.
He grew up in Cincinnati, where he played on a semi-professional football team with the father of Cincinnati baseball legend Pete Rose.
In 1934, he married

The couple raised their four children in Bellevue, where they lived until 1970, when the government bought their home for the construction of Interstate 471.
Mr. Oates graduated from St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, then went to a technical school.
He worked for 37 years as a stationary engineer, taking care of the boilers at the American Book Co. in Cincinnati.
Around 1954, he started volunteering for the Bellevue Fire Department, helping recruit and train new members.
By the time he retired, he was captain.
Mr. Oates also was a charter member and past president of the Bellevue Vets.
Even after he moved from Bellevue to Cincinnati in 1970, the Navy veteran remained active in the organization.
He was a member for more than 50 years.
While his children were in school, Mr. and Mrs. Oates chaperoned at a canteen for Bellevue teen-agers, Mrs. Janson said.
"He was a good time. He was a fun-loving guy, a good dad, a great husband," Mrs. Janson said. "He and my mother in their later years had an RV and they traveled a lot," she said.
"He was one wonderful man."
