Bernie Heidelberg operated Klingenberg's Hardware

Although he had worked hard all of his life and eventually bought his own business, Bernard E. "Bernie" Heidelberg never complained about putting in long hours.

"My father had a style where it was more about being compassionate and helping people," said a son, Kenneth Heidelberg of Oradell, N.J.

"He had a sense of humor and engaged people. He would put them at ease and make them feel comfortable."

Bernie Heidelberg, 82, of Alexandria, died at 12:05 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. He was a former owner and manager of Klingenberg's Hardware Store in Newport. His wife, Virginia Luehr Heidelberg, died in 1985.

Mr. Heidelberg's father and grandfather were Newport natives. He began working when he was 11 years old, selling items from a variety truck. At 15 he sold ice, and at 21 he began his long association at Klingenberg's Hardware Store.

Mr. Heidelberg bought the business in 1965 and later opened a Klingenberg's in Dayton, Ky., with another son, Bernard Heidelberg of Alexandria.

"My father never prejudged anyone," Kenneth Heidelberg said. "He treated them with dignity and kindness. This is what made him so popular and successful in business. People responded to and appreciated my dad."

In addition to his sons, survivors include a daughter, Barbara Hartig of Highland Heights; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas.

Visitation will be there from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday.

Entombment will be in St. Stephen cemetery Mausoleum, Ft. Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Ft. Thomas, Ky. 41075.

George Midden, farmer and leader

George Bernard Midden Jr. took pride in his farm and his community.

Mr. Midden, 72, of Cynthiana, died Friday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana.

As president and a 25-year member of the Harrison County Water Association, Mr. Midden helped lead the effort to extend water lines throughout the county.

He was a member of the board of directors of the First Federal Bank in Cynthiana, a former president of the Harrison County Farm Bureau, a former president of Burley Tobacco of Kentucky and a former chairman of Harrison Memorial Hospital's board of directors.

"He was very jolly and outgoing," said his wife, Frances J. Midden. "He read the newspaper from front to back and kept up on current events."

Mr. Midden was a Navy vet eran of World War II. He was a member of St. Edward Church and a member and past exalted ruler of Cynthiana Elks Lodge No. 438.

During their retirement, he and his wife traveled across the United States. He was diagnosed with cancer about five months ago.

Other survivors include his a daughter, Mary Frances Melton of Danville; sisters, Helen Mehler of Louisville, Ruth Box of Cynthiana and Ann Sweeney of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Edward Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana, with the rosary to be said at 8:30 p.m. Burial will be at St. Edward Cemetery, Cynthiana. Memorials are suggested to St. Edward School, 123 N. Walnut St., Cynthiana, Ky. 41031.

Gary W. Derks, 91, of Latonia, died at 8:40 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice, Covington. He was a retired pressman for the Cincinnati Enquirer. He was a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia. His wife, Thelma M. Derks, died in 1990.

Survivors include daughters, Anita M. Schneider of Crestview Hills and Gayle R. Boehmer of Toledo, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Church, Latonia. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, with prayers at 10:30 a.m. Entombment will be at Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014 or Holy Cross Church, 3612 Church St., Latonia, Ky. 41015. Norris Larry Elder, 37, of Ghent, died Friday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. He was a laborer for Kentucky Ladder Co.

Survivors include his wife, Sherri Semones Elder; stepfather, Joseph Hager of Shepherdsville; sisters, Kathy Allen of Shepherdsville and Tammy Kindoll of Carrollton; a brother, Gilbert Elder of Leitchfield; half-brothers, James French and Grandville Ramey of Leitchfield.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton, with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Ghent Masonic Cemetery.

James Ray Reed, 72, of Crittenden, died at 3 p.m. Thursday at his residence. He was a retired chief engineer for Columbia Marine Co., Ludlow. He was a former Merchant Marine and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Crase Reed of Crittenden; a stepson, Greg Crase of Dry Ridge; a brother, Walter Reed of Florence; and sisters, Anna Ruth Hughes and Elwanda Nelson, both of Cincinnati.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona, with visitation from 4 to 9 p.m. today. Burial will be in New Bethel Ceme tery, Verona. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Sam Wainscott, 75, of Erlanger, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired truck driver for Consolidated Freightways. He was a member of Florence Baptist Church and a trustee for Teamsters Union Local 100.

Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Fite of Florence; a son, Terry Wainscott of Hogansville, Ga.; sisters, Bernice Bourne and Evelyn Bourne, both of Owenton; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence, with visitation from 10 a.m. Burial will be in Owenton IOOF Cemetery.

Charles Edward Walker, 80, of Covington, died at 4:20 p.m. Thursday at his residence. He was a retired tool grinder for William Powell Valve Co., Cincinnati.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of South Side Baptist Church, Covington.

His wife, Elizabeth Walker, died in 1963.

Survivors include daughters, Darlene Biggs and Lana Bray, both of Covington; sisters, Helen Cottengim of Wildwood, Fla., Ruth Hauser of Taylor Mill, Louise Beckman of Erlanger, and Margaret Faulkner and Betty Eichelberger, both of Latonia; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington, with visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Nelson Family Cemetery, Corinth.

Marianne Creekmore Wheeler, 68, of Walton, died at 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice, Covington. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, George P. "Bud" Wheeler, died in 1988.

Survivors include a son, David P. Wheeler at home; a daughter, Connie Clayton of Shawnee, Kan.; a brother, Jennings B. Creekmore Jr. of Covington; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow, with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.
