Owen farmer Millard Parr, loved family
Millard Harris Parr worked hard all of his life.
A tobacco and cattle farmer from Owen County, Mr. Parr survived poverty as a child to see his own family grow well and strong.
He also beat cancer before dying of a heart attack Wednesday at his home.
A daughter, Judy McKenney of Corinth, recalls her father as a tireless worker who drove a tractor until his dying day.
"He was my buddy. He lived right next to me," Ms. McKenney said.
Mr. Parr, 78, of Corinth, was a retired State Highway Department maintenance worker and a member of New Columbus Baptist Church in Corinth.
He had survived other heart attacks in the past and had to use a walker to get around, his daughter said. Still, he insisted on doing his own work on his farm, his daughter said.
"He just loved his farm. He liked to crack
jokes and he was a family person," she said.
She said her father enjoyed the past week. He had a special meal for Memorial Day and went fishing. He voted for his favorite candidates on Tuesday and enjoyed his children.
And he started the day Wednesday as always, getting up to work on his farm.
"He was raised poor, but he was honest," Ms. McKenney said.
Other survivors include his wife, Hallie T. Beckham Parr of Corinth; a son, Victor Parr of Corinth; another daughter, Beverly Simpson of Cincinnati;eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rogers Funeral Home, Corinth. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in New Columbus Cemetery, Corinth. Memorials are suggested to New Columbus Baptist Church Building Fund, Route 2, Corinth, Ky. 41010.
JoAnn Hopper, 63, of Verona, died at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at her home. She was a cook with Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Ft. Thomas.
Survivors include sons, Randy Key of Ft. Thomas and Brooke Key of Verona; a brother, Charles F. Benke of Verona; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Evergreen cemetery Chapel, Southgate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Mary Teresa Kloentrup, 88, of Covington, died at 10:25 p.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Care Center, Ft. Wright. She was a retired sales clerk with Pogue's Department Store, Cincinnati, and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia.
Her husband, Casper H. "Jim" Kloentrup, died in 1968. A son, James Kloentrup, died in 1989.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara K. Hughes of Taylor Mill; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Charles Care Center.
Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.

Evelyn F. Gention Mayes, 58, of Newport, died Wednesday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence.
Survivors include a daughter, Trisha Herald of Ft. Thomas; a sister, Mary Stewart of Newport; a brother, James Gention of Highland Heights; and one grandchild.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport.
Visitation will begin there at 8 a.m. Saturday.
Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.
Mary M. Gordon Pitcher, 75, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died Wednesday at Hospice of Cincinnati.
She was a nurse.
Her husband, Henry L. Pitcher Jr., preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Barry Pitcher and Brian Pitcher, both of Cincinnati; her mother, Margaret Cummins of Cincinnati; and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Frederick Funeral Home, Cincinnati.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Arlington Memorial Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Wilfred Milton Rodgers, 76, of Cold Spring, died at 9:55 a.m. Thursday at his home. He was a retired cafe owner.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Ann Rodgers; a son, Colin Rodgers of Lavant, Maine; daughters, Karen Rodgers of Columbus, Ohio, Sharon Rodgers of Louisville, Sue Haddix of Erlanger, and Connie Rodgers and Gina Brunen, both of Florence; brothers, Frank Rodgers of Mt. Carmel, Ohio, Donald Rodgers of Dayton and Carl Rodgers of Newport; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at the convenience of the family.
Mr. Rodgers' body was donated to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Lorene Connie Schell, 75, of Florence, died Thursday evening St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.

Virginia Kenner Lanter Searcy, 82, of Covington, died
at 6:50 p.m. Thursday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence.
She was a native of Pendleton County and a former waitress.
She was the widow of Roy D. Lanter, who died in 1966, and William Searcy, who died in 1978.
Survivors include her son, Thomas Lanter of Florence; a sister, Goldie Kennedy of Falmouth; and a grandson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.
Visitation will be there from noon until the time of services Monday.
Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.
Nancy Irene Bush Settles, 71, of Carrollton, died Wednes
day at Kings Daughters Hospital, Madison, Ind. She was a homemaker.
Her husband, Archie Clifford Settles, died in 1992.
Survivors include sons, Clifford Lee Settles of Vancouver, Wash., Jim Settles of West Milton, Ohio, and Ron Settles of Moraine, Ohio; daughters, Diane Martin of Troy, Ohio, Gail Moore of Argilite and Veda Miller of Brookville, Pa.; brothers, Phillip Bush of Grayson, Herbert Bush of Argilite and Edward Bush of Largo, Fla.; sisters, Ann Felty of Grayson and Lucille Stephens of Dayton; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
